I wonder if more people maybe have that discrepancy that I have. As a consumer, I love a lot of entertainment centered around women - seconding AHS and Girls, and then there's also Orphan Black (which is excellent) and Orange Is The New Black. There's female-led comedies like Parks And Recreation and 30 Rock (finished, but extremely re-watchable), the women on Community and Brooklyn Nine Nine are frequently great, and I also watch Game Of Thrones mostly for the women. I love and support these shows.

However, I'm also a M/M slash fan, so in fandom, I'm all about the dick touching (though they don't need to be white). I think what people squee over doesn't always reflect everything they like in their entertainment.

I think this is a good point. I like a lot of shows with female leads and I have a lot of favorite female characters -- I watch a lot of anime and some of my favorites are magical girl shows, which are majority-female casts. But in fandom I mostly write slash and focus on male characters. It doesn't mean that I wouldn't love more awesome ladies in my entertainment, it just means that I tend to ship more m/m couples and I write what I ship.

Yeah, this is me. I vastly prefer female protagonists and main characters in my media, I tend to pass on a lot of things if there's no awesome women to be seen in the primary cast (or if they keep getting killed off), but once I get to fandom, I usually latch on to the dude characters in both reading and writing. So basically I support female-centric media and male-centric fandom. And since what makes female-centric media successful is my money and viewing, not my fanfic, I think that's okay.
