I posted an anime fic a while ago on FFN and AO3 and got nothing on either site for two weeks, I think. I wasn't my first fic and I had at least always gotten favs if not actual reviews, so I was pretty crushed in the beginning. Then I honestly forgot about it, but the very first kind of feedback I got? A kudos on AO3. A month after I first posted the story on FFN I got a fav and a review, but the fact that AO3, which really sucks for anime fandoms, was the first site that I got any kind of feedback from stuck with me.

But yeah, anime fandom on AO3 really sucks. The first time I posted fic for a Western fandom on AO3 I was blown away by the response because I've been so used to the silence after only writing for anime fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 10:34 am (UTC)(link)A bit more on topic, I can understand being frustrated when it comes to rarepairs in a sense. I'm not a writer but most of my ships are rarepairs and there's not much in the way of fic for them. So I can imagine how frustrating it must be not to get any feedback on your fic because people in fandom refuse to read anything that's not their otp which in a lot of cases tends to be the juggernaut ship. /bitter Sorry for the mini-rant. Anyway, I'll read your Code Geass fic if you don't mind linking it. I'm vaguely familiar with the characters but not enough to leave a good review. What is the pairing?
At least there's an audience for your western fandom fics. If only anime fandom would get bigger on Ao3..

I don't mind! It's here. It was a written for a Gino/Lelouch prompt, so set in the second season. It's from Gino's POV and is essentially about all the things Gino doesn't know about Lelouch and his relationship with Suzaku. Hope you like it!
I'll be honest, I've read rarepair fics on AO3 (especially on the anime side) even though I don't ship it just because I felt bad seeing the low hit/kudos count. A lot of them were perfectly lovely, but because they were rarepair in an already tiny fandom (at least on AO3) they didn't get any attention. After a Digiom fic also took a while to get any feedback I actually got a lot more relaxed about reviews and the like. Don't get me wrong, I love reviews and like getting them, but if I don't? It doesn't matter as much to me anymore as it used to. That Digimon fic is one of my favourites of my own writing, and it didn't matter to me what anyone else thought, I like it.
AO3 is great for big western fandoms (though even then it depends on the characters/pairings in the fic; I've written MCU fic with barely any hits. Still more than on my anime fics, of course), but for anime fandoms FFN is still the best if you want feedback. Which sucks if you're a writer, because uploading fic on FFN is godawful.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)I'm going to head to bed and get some rest before I read your fic and reply fully to your comment. I guess it may be a bit silly to inform you of this, but I wanted to be polite. I look forward to reading your fic and continuing our chat later today/tonight. That is of you don't mind waiting. Hopefully you've got notifications on so you will know that I replied.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-13 05:47 am (UTC)(link)Oh, I've never seen that used as the pairing name for it before. So I was a bit confused, heh. I've seen SuzaLulu used for the pairing name but that's it. No worries. Getting into fandom late is how I always get into a fandom.
That's rather nice of you to do. I think that I will start doing the same, because rarepairs need all of the love and I'm sure it would let the authors know that someone enjoyed their rarepair fic. That's a good stance to take on getting reviews, favorites, kudos, etc. Don't let it get to you too much.
As for your fic, I absolutely loved it! While I'm not too familiar with the characters, especially Gino, it was a fantastic little read and I think I have a new rarepair ship. I enjoyed the conversation between Gino and Suzaku, the little hint of jealousy/animosity Suzaku displayed.
Gino's teasing of Lelouch, making him sputter and all flustered, was a wonderful touch. And the fact that Lelouch has a speech prepared when people confess to him is just brilliant. These two play off each other rather well in this fic and it makes me hope the date goes well. Also, lol at Lelouch going on the date just to spite Suzaku. Flustered, sputtering Lelouch is adorable.
It's good for western fandoms in general, but especially if you write a fic featuring a fandom darling. Chatacters and ships that are rare or not as well liked don't seem to get as much attention. But it is still a more attention than fic in an anime fandom would get. How is uploading to ffnet awful?

Thanks anon! Code Geass is mainly Sazu/Lulu which is a shame. Don't get me wrong, I love the pairing too, but especially the second season gave us so many more characters to ship! Especially Gino (he's one of the best things of season two). I'm glad you enjoyed the fic even if you weren't too familiar with the characters.
Uploading to FFN is a pain in the ass. Aside from the fact that they change the process every few years it's so unnecessarily complicated. Basically, you have to upload the document containing the fic first, then, once it's uploaded, you can create a new story. But first you have to confirm that you read the TOS every. single. time. Uploading chapters follows the same principle. If you want to change something (because you noticed a typo or something) you have to make the change in the document, IIRC, and then go to the story and upload the chapter a new using the changed document. If it's been longer than 90 days though the documents are deleted from the server, so if a new FFN updates suddenly screws up your formatting, you have to upload the document a new, etc.
And the formatting is, of course, wonky as ever. I've used the FFN scene break (a line) and have it be eaten when it was posted. As a reader FFN isn't that bad (though I really miss AO3's View Full Work option), but as a writer it's incredibly shitty.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-15 03:49 am (UTC)(link)You're quite welcome. I wasn't sure if I hould leave my comments for your fic here or on AO3. I know how you feel tbh. It is frustrating when a fandom seems to just focus on one or two pairings when there's so many other interesting characters and pairings that could be written. It gets stagnant and dull after a while, imo. But people will write what they want to write. Code Geass foes look like it has a ton of interesting characters! Cornelia looks like such an awesome character. I checked the Code Geass section on ffnet and was surprised at how little fic Gino and Cornelia had. Just damn. I thought Gino would be a bit more popular than that. He seems like the type of character fandom would adore.
Oh my goodness! That sounds like such an absolute hassle. I've thought about attempting to write fic and if I ever finished it, posting it on ffnet. It would reach sa wider audience since the fandom I'd small these days, but going about uploading fic on the site sounds like such a pain. Wait, AO3 got rid of the view full work option? Bummer.
