I don't look down on people who don't habitually discuss fandom, but the way you feel like fandom can get to be hard work and you need a break from talking about it, I find talking about non-fandom just as difficult. People want to endlessly drone on and on about gossip and their non-serious personal problems and I can only take that in small doses before I desperately need to spend five hours taking apart the consistent theme of teamwork in popular shounen manga as it relates to collectivism in Japanese culture or some shit. Fandom is my refuge, and it's hard to explain to people who aren't geeks what the appeal is, and they look down on it, same as geeks look down on non-geeks. Basically, closed minds and elitism ruin everything, OP.

+1

Everyone has different doses/balances of fandom and non-fandom stuff that works for them, and that's ok.

I find my closest friends are the types who can easily transition between the two types of discussions. One of my best friends & I mostly talk about "real shit", like what's going on in our lives, the little problems and annoyances we have, and then we can transition into discussing films, TV or fanfiction. I thought I was the geekier one in the friendship but recently she's gotten really into slash fanfiction, which somewhat surprised me, but I'm happy to discuss it with her, even though I no longer read fanfiction much.
