Computer help?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-15 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
So my laptop's display screen is partially broken but usable. I'm gonna to need to replace the laptop's lcd screen if it's going to be fixed and I know what I need to do it and found a decent video tutorial on how to. However, I've never done computer hardware work before and I honestly don't know how they work, so I don't want to screw up the whole thing up for forever if I make a minor mistake. So what I'm asking is there a big risk with replacing a computer screens and is there anything I need to watch out for?

Before you have fun with that, you should probably check to see if you're still under warranty.

I've already checked and I'm not.

Okay well, replacing a laptop screen isn't that difficult, but it does require a bit of planning. I do suggest you do it in as clean an area as possible to avoid the possibility of dirt or dust getting into the upper half of the case while the bezel and panel are removed.

What model laptop do you have?

Pavilion m6, which doesn't have screws for the panel so I'll be needing to carefully detach the panel from the adhesive.

Replacing the bezel is going to need new adhesive, probably (unless you can just stick it back on.) I suggest you get some E6000 glue just in case.

It looks like it's fine to stick back on, but I'll keep some handy just in case.

I'm most concerned about connecting the wires correctly, so is there anything I should watch out for there?

And thanks!

There should only be one, maybe two wires to connect.

Thanks so much for the help! :D

As someone who has replaced their laptop's LCD screen twice, all I can say is 1) read/watch your instructions carefully several times, until you feel like you do understand what the procedure is, 2) go slowly and carefully and try to remember what every step did so you can take it in reverse later, 3) very carefully set aside any screws or hardware and make sure you keep screws for x part in one pile and y part in another pile, and 4) if it looks at all like you're about to break something, stop, take it in reverse, and figure out why it's about to break. You may have missed a screw or something.

Thank you very much! I'll definitely keep that in mind!
