Like..how much money does the author even make off of this? Doesn't he just sell his rights to the book away and that is it? Or do authors make royalties off of movies?

I read that they had a specific deal where they paid him up front and that he didn't have any percentage of the box office. I think SOME authors can get a percentage but not all of them, and the producers of the movie were really clear that OSC didn't get anything based off how the movie did.

That said, I can see not wanting to financially support it for moral reasons. Even if you're not directly giving OSC your money, more money means more support for a sequel/projects that will give OSC money.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
That's why I'm not going to see it. I have been told he won't get my dollars directly, as such, but it's the principle of the thing. I won't support the movie in any way because it's attached to a homophobic jerk.

As far as I can tell, he's not, but if the movie does well, there's the potential for him to profit on sequels (should they be made).

Depends on the deal made when a studio buys the rights to make a movie/show of a book. If they do get royalties it would come out of DVD sales. Really though they see great income more from the recognition of having a movie made from their books since people then go out and buy more of their books.

I've read multiple articles claiming Card isn't making any money from the movie and that the distributer of the film is donating some of the proceeds to a equal rights charity, thought I don't know how true either of these claims are.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Well, if it's a news article, produced by a legit news publication, they're very true, providing the source wasn't lying.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-11-16 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Their noses look like they were carved out of the same piece... of nose flesh?

That is all.

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2013-11-16 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I think they both have gorgeous profiles (especially the dude who plays Bonzo because that nose is magnificent), but I feel weird because the are like 14? 16?.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-11-16 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Oh they're both definitely striking but in this picture I can't stop focusing on wanting to push their noses back together and not just in the smutty way I usually do.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
In the book, I think they're like 10-11.

18 and 15

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Given that the bulk of filming happened in 2012. Moises Arias (Bonzo) was born in 1994 and used to be on Hannah Montana. Asa Butterfield (Ender) was born in 1997 and used to be on Merlin.

I feel weird about that picture too, but not in a good way. Like, maybe this is me coming off studying Vichy France recently, and maybe this has a lot to do with the homophobic grossness make me suspect other forms of bigotry in OSC's work (however unfoundedly), but seeing those profiles... my first thought is that that pic looks like a still from anti-semitic propaganda. Like some sort of original facial Pangaea?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
omg I can't unsee it now. I want to smoosh their faces together and complete the puzzle

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I really wish people would learn to think critically about shit like this. I mean, boycotting is all well and good, but the ability to enjoy problematic media is a valuable skill to have if you want to get through life.

Everything is problematic.

If you want to see it, and are willing to risk potentially getting banned from a theater or even police being involved, then it's probably worth just chucking $10-15 at a ticket and going to see it. I don't like the author, or what a sexist shitpail he is, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy a movie based on his work.

Plus, I'm reasonably sure all the actors and people that worked on this are not all sexist terrible people, so I'm supporting them with my ticket, imo.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
The problem with THIS is that Enders Game, itself, is not a problematic piece of media for the most part. It is a powerful piece of work that has changed the minds of many people for the BETTER. Made them understand the power of diplomacy; made them rethink the idea of "need to know" and contemplate the boundaries of friendship, bigotry and hate.

It is a great, commendable work. Created by a scumbag, yes. But the scumbaggery isn't IN the work. The work is the work and the work is filled with depth and intelligence.

And as the people above you said: He's not making any money off the movie. Go and support the actors, and the members of the production team who wanted to bring the story to life in an age of drones and the constant threat of war. Because the story needs to be told.

Shower scene (spoilers)

It's been a few years (like, 12, good God I am old) but didn't that scene end with the one kid's death?

Pretty sure yes.

It does, the older boy's - even though it's only [very heavily] implied.

Hey, it's been at least 17 years for me, and I was in my mid-teens when I read it.

There wasn't all that much to it in the movie. It goes on longer in the book and is over in a few seconds in the movie. There's far less wrestling in the movie.

Also, the characters are 10 (Ender) and 13 (Bonzo), so...

That's...not really how a boycott works? I mean, it kind of negates the whole "I am on the highest horse" thing if you're going to use/obtain the product from the evil source anyway.

From a realistic perspective, yes, stealing the object makes the same financial impact as simply abstaining from buying it...but isn't part of the point of boycotting dickbags with creepy opinions, depriving them of an audience?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
In this case I don't think anyone is arguing that the movie is going to be spreading OSC's creepy opinions, they're just arguing that OSC is creepy and shouldn't be supported.
