Like..how much money does the author even make off of this? Doesn't he just sell his rights to the book away and that is it? Or do authors make royalties off of movies?

I read that they had a specific deal where they paid him up front and that he didn't have any percentage of the box office. I think SOME authors can get a percentage but not all of them, and the producers of the movie were really clear that OSC didn't get anything based off how the movie did.

That said, I can see not wanting to financially support it for moral reasons. Even if you're not directly giving OSC your money, more money means more support for a sequel/projects that will give OSC money.

That's why I'm not going to see it. I have been told he won't get my dollars directly, as such, but it's the principle of the thing. I won't support the movie in any way because it's attached to a homophobic jerk.

So, do you also avoid movies connected with men who beat women or those who abuse kids? So, when was the last time you saw a movie?

I feel like you think you're making some kind of point here?

It's quite possible they do if they're aware of it.

But there are a number of things about Card that are different--one, he's very much actively homophobic. He tries to convince others to be. He takes a political stance on it. Someone who hit their wife is obviously bad, but they might regret it, they're probably not contributing to further wife-beating, etc. Card also uses his money to support homophobic campaigns and such.

As far as I can tell, he's not, but if the movie does well, there's the potential for him to profit on sequels (should they be made).

Depends on the deal made when a studio buys the rights to make a movie/show of a book. If they do get royalties it would come out of DVD sales. Really though they see great income more from the recognition of having a movie made from their books since people then go out and buy more of their books.
