I say "on the mainstream radar" is more like it.

For example, there's a fic I loved back in the mid '00s that the author took down because they were going to publish it as ofic.

Said ofic has not materialized as of this posting, and as far as I've seen, the author doesn't even write anymore. So the author razed the field for nothing.

Same thing happened with another author whose fics I enjoyed. She pulled every single one she'd written about three years ago, convinced she was going to be published ASAP.

Not a single announcement of anything being published yet.

It's not that easy to break into the market, but I do wish you luck. There's no "good" way to pull a fic. People will always be hurt, but you have to do what you have to do.

I actually found one of my current favorite authors through her fanfic first.. which she left up. I don't know if it was a difference in how her publishing deal was, or the fact that she published ofic that started as ofic, rather than fanfic with the serial numbers filed off, but she now has me as a loyal buyer/reader because she didn't burn all her bridges to fandom.
