Its an unbelievably AU of a small version of a very big fandom. Unrecognisable characters. I should even be fine saying nothing or have a small apology on FF.net for taking the fic down. It has its fans. I should send free copies to my betas and long-time readers though.

The whole point of the secret came about in wondering what the "right" way nof shutting down a fanwork to make way for a original property was, since the S/R fic seems a fairly newish phenomenon, or if not new, something that is now on the mainstream radar. Certainly the OL versions have to go. Eh, like the other anon said, like Mr Furious in Mystery Men I should just Keep Dreamin. But when it comes close enough to touch, it raises all sorts of questions.

I figured it was an AU or something. If a publisher smells lawsuit they generally don't like to go forward. There are, of course, exceptions.* I figure you should do what your publisher thinks you should do. Deleting your fic would be on the safe side and is what fic writers who were published before you have done. On the other hand, it can be seen as a dick move. I normally don't write fic. I only write original stuff. So I've never been in your position. Taking other people's advice in this thread over mine would probably be the better idea. Anyway, good luck with your work. Maybe I'll even read your stuff someday.

*CC looking at you baby.

I say "on the mainstream radar" is more like it.

For example, there's a fic I loved back in the mid '00s that the author took down because they were going to publish it as ofic.

Said ofic has not materialized as of this posting, and as far as I've seen, the author doesn't even write anymore. So the author razed the field for nothing.

Same thing happened with another author whose fics I enjoyed. She pulled every single one she'd written about three years ago, convinced she was going to be published ASAP.

Not a single announcement of anything being published yet.

It's not that easy to break into the market, but I do wish you luck. There's no "good" way to pull a fic. People will always be hurt, but you have to do what you have to do.

I actually found one of my current favorite authors through her fanfic first.. which she left up. I don't know if it was a difference in how her publishing deal was, or the fact that she published ofic that started as ofic, rather than fanfic with the serial numbers filed off, but she now has me as a loyal buyer/reader because she didn't burn all her bridges to fandom.

My $0.02.
