because god forbid there be TWO protagonists of color. and if we're going to have ONE, there absolutely has to be a white male main character in there somewhere. just because.

please don't tell me you're oblivious to this trend.

There comes a point when I stop bothering. I complain when a show only has white people, and I complain when a show stereotypes its nonwhite characters. But if a show has a largely nonwhite cast, and it's set in an area that's racially mixed, it feels realistic and believable to have a few white characters. (This is different from, say, a show that takes place in China but makes an American the protagonist--this comic takes place in New Jersey.)

just because it's mostly nonwhite doesn't mean people can still be irritated by it? it's still entirely possible and realistic to have a cast of entirely non-white characters.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
woulda been realistic if they did it, woulda been realistic if they didn't

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
thats not the point

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
then why are we talking about realism

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad there's a white male just because it pisses off tumblr people like you

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
da

Would you be glad if a hate crime happened because it would piss off tumblr people?

is2g, tumblr sjws can be annoying but the reactionary backlashers like you aren't any better, I hope you know that.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes because a fictional character existing is just like a hate crime

y'all are THE WORST :(

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
lol at you equating violence against someone to a fictional white male existing

never change, sjws

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
NA

Right, because showing a person of color and a white person being friends is totally comparable to hate crimes? That's really a very special kind of logic.

Of course a fictional token white guy and a racist hate crime are on different planes of offensiveness, and I didn't mean to equate them on the same level. What they have in common though is that both spring from the same problem of racism. Look at all the comments below going "well of course you need a white protag because otherwise white people wouldn't support the comic". So while having a fictional male protag is relatively harmless, the fact that it is NECESSARY to make the product sell derives from the same kind of sentiment that would lead to a hate crime. Which is why I mentioned it. And if you don't get that you're being purposely obtuse.

I know right?

I just after awhile you try not to think they honestly mean this stuff. The arguments they make are based on extremist slippery slope logic.

"I don't like the fact that they can't have a show without white people" becomes "the fact that they have a white character leads to vicious hate crime"

I just don't think this is the comic you should be using to make your point. It's in New Jersey. It's about Americans. It's allowed to represent the diversity of America. If you want to make this point, target something that puts a white guy in a place where white guys probably wouldn't be.

or, you know, something that has a cast that isn't composed primarily of POCs
