We have a community of Irish Travelers nearby, and yeah, some of their customs are really strange to outsiders, but they're still just people. People who get publicly mocked and treated with suspicion and derision by a lot of people around here. Even people who are too polite (or even enlightened) to make racist comments about other groups seem to consider "gypsies" fair game. It's so gross. This show just brings out the worst of the stereotypes and doesn't show the everyday, normal stuff they do just like other people.

It would do you some good to remember that reality TV has a long history of showing off very ugly stereotypes (think of Jerry Springer, yo). These people are purposefully selected for their ridiculousness, then framed and edited to match our biases or produce the most outrageous stuff possible. It's gross enough already, but when it's done to mock entire ethnic groups (who are usually notoriously secretive and insular because of the way they're treated by broader society, ahem), it's just... ugh.

Irish travellers were the gated community ones with just the brag 'poetry' and bling focused traditions and not the Romney(?) ones who taught their boys to objectify and sexually pursue 'dirty' non-gypsy girls and then just marry whichever 'clean' fourteen year old gypsy girl they thought was pretty? The same ones who believe a girl shouldn't know what sex is until her husband explains it to her on her wedding night but should look as sexualized as possible?

Because in that ep they just seemed like the outcome of shallow people having a lot of money and not a scary culture built on preying on fourteen year old girls.

Part of one i saw had a party and the very-sexily-dressed girls (who were told not to date or fool around and stay virgins) were literally, physically *dragged* outside by boys who tried to force them to kiss (the boys). If they *had* kissed the boys, they'd have been in big, big trouble. But none of the girls fought back or said no, because you don't say no to boys/men.

It was creepy and horrible and even one girl started crying and everybody was laughing like it was the most fun thing ever.

Yeah, I saw that. They call it something in particular when boys grab girls and accost them a bit.

Meh. I mean - i really really hope that that is not a big part of the culture, but when little kids are acting these scenes out? You know they've seen it being acted out in front of them. They didn't just decide to do that, and that sucks.

(And no, not saying they/this culture are the only people who do horrible, creepy things like that, so please let's not jump on *that* bandwagaon, anons.)

It is a big part sadly, and it's called 'grabbing'. Girls are supposed to be grateful if a boy grabs them.

I know, right? I always judge the camera person when horrible shite like that happens. Or, more rightly, i suppose, i judge the show for wanting to push and film junk like that and the camera person for going along with it, though fuck knows they need a paycheck just like everybody else.

It's just crummy all the way 'round.
