(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)It would do you some good to remember that reality TV has a long history of showing off very ugly stereotypes (think of Jerry Springer, yo). These people are purposefully selected for their ridiculousness, then framed and edited to match our biases or produce the most outrageous stuff possible. It's gross enough already, but when it's done to mock entire ethnic groups (who are usually notoriously secretive and insular because of the way they're treated by broader society, ahem), it's just... ugh.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)All the guys I saw are douchebags. Like, girls. GIRLS. YOU CAN DO BETTER. ALSO STOP GOING TO VEGAS WHEN YOU ARE SIXTEEN AND MARRYING THIS PIECE OF TRASH. (I loved the one guy who was like "WE CAN'T ARGUE IN THE MORNING STOP FIGHTING WITH ME IN THE MORNING THIS UPSETS THE MYSTICAL FLOW OF GOODNESS IN THE HOUSE" and I'm just like "Maybe if you weren't such a bag of ass she wouldn't get pissed at you. Stop being a cheating whore." )
(the dresses themselves are fascinating from a design standpoint, but I personally would never wear one)
It's not "a culture", it's a tv show
(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)Many people on reality TV are -- or appear to be -- utterly horrifying. This should not be news to you, OP.

Look at Philippa Langley. That woman found the skeleton of fucking Richard III after years of meticulous research, and now she gets mocked for being a ~hysterical~ and over-invested fangirl. Why? Because that's what editing made her look like. Because that's how Channel 4 (originator of the Big Fat Gypsy Wedding format) sells shows. The same way tabloids sell their drivel. Because anger is the quickest way to get you emotionally invested. Who needs good drama or quality journalism if they can make millions getting you to hate minorities?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-17 07:20 am (UTC)(link)My dad worked at a local haunted house as a scary clown. He (strangely enough) became somewhat 'famous' both in our region and among the larger horror community. Famous enough that Wife Swap contacted our family to offer us a spot on the show.
We were going to be paid a fair amount of money, and filming would last a week iirc. It would be entirely scripted. My dad (who is actually just a totally normal person who dressed up once a year for this local show) would have to pretend to be a guy who wore his clown makeup all year round, was verbally abusive to his wife, had a home full of crazy Halloween shit, etc. Basically Ozzy's family but more redneck-y. My mom and I would have to act like we were also crazy. The money was tempting, but we decided none of us wanted people to think we were horrible freaks so we didn't do the show.
Shows like Wife Swap, Jersey Shore, Toddlers and Tiaras, Honey Boo Boo, this show.... None of them are real. At all. (Even the Reality TV shows that aren't totally scripted, like Deadliest Catch, are often edited in a way that makes events seem completely different than what actually happened.) These people are actors and they're being paid to be as outrageous as they can possibly be. Some of them like Snooki manage to gain enough of a following that they can continue making money off of their persona outside of the show, but that doesn't mean that's who they really are. You can't judge communities and cultures based on stupid TV shows.
