Remember, they're filming the things they think will get a reaction, and leaving out the things that won't. I don't know what culture this is, but if you want to actually learn about it, your best bet is to meet someone from it.

I think this is My Gypsy Wedding or something like that.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
There were redeeming qualities in Toddlers and Tiaras and in Jersey Shore?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
No. OP has issues if they found any.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
what is this show

[personal profile] tabaqui 2013-11-16 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
It's 'Gypsy Wedding' or something? 'Gypsy' girls getting married in weird, huge dresses that actually bruise their hops they're so heavy. Watched it once, it was incredibly creepy.

Is this "My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding"? It looks like the sort of dresses they often wear there.

I have no idea what this show is, but that thing she's wearing is a crime against both fashion and humanity.
starphotographs: I like him. He kind of looks and acts like one of my characters. (I did not know this when I started liking him!) (Victor (...>:|))

It reminds me of a 90s Barbie dress. The weird shiny scratchy kind.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Everything I've read about the Gypsy/Roma culture, or heard from relatives in law enforcement, just makes me sad. So does this dress, which according to google is worn by a 14 year old.

We have a community of Irish Travelers nearby, and yeah, some of their customs are really strange to outsiders, but they're still just people. People who get publicly mocked and treated with suspicion and derision by a lot of people around here. Even people who are too polite (or even enlightened) to make racist comments about other groups seem to consider "gypsies" fair game. It's so gross. This show just brings out the worst of the stereotypes and doesn't show the everyday, normal stuff they do just like other people.

It would do you some good to remember that reality TV has a long history of showing off very ugly stereotypes (think of Jerry Springer, yo). These people are purposefully selected for their ridiculousness, then framed and edited to match our biases or produce the most outrageous stuff possible. It's gross enough already, but when it's done to mock entire ethnic groups (who are usually notoriously secretive and insular because of the way they're treated by broader society, ahem), it's just... ugh.

What I want to know is, where do they get the money to spend on the blinged-out dresses? Aren't they covered in thousands of swarovski crystals?

I've fallen into those moods where I keep on reading or watching something that horrifies and upsets me, and the solution isn't to dig deeper into the warped portrayal that's upsetting you so much. The solution is to recognize how warped and selective it is, and to purposefully widen your perspective of the situation. I really do know what you're talking about. Minus the random racism...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I watched three episodes in a row once because I was so horrified I actually couldn't look away to grab the remote and turn it to something else.

All the guys I saw are douchebags. Like, girls. GIRLS. YOU CAN DO BETTER. ALSO STOP GOING TO VEGAS WHEN YOU ARE SIXTEEN AND MARRYING THIS PIECE OF TRASH. (I loved the one guy who was like "WE CAN'T ARGUE IN THE MORNING STOP FIGHTING WITH ME IN THE MORNING THIS UPSETS THE MYSTICAL FLOW OF GOODNESS IN THE HOUSE" and I'm just like "Maybe if you weren't such a bag of ass she wouldn't get pissed at you. Stop being a cheating whore." )

(the dresses themselves are fascinating from a design standpoint, but I personally would never wear one)

It's not "a culture", it's a tv show

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
For fuck's sake, do not judge an entire culture by the people who were judged entertaining enough to carry a reality tv show and actually agreed to do it.

Many people on reality TV are -- or appear to be -- utterly horrifying. This should not be news to you, OP.

I understand being uncomfortable with something you see as sexist, but I find it a lot more uncomfortable you decided a whole culture of people have no value based on something you saw on TV. TV and especially Reality TV is not really something you should judge anyone by and especially not a culture that has been inaccurately portrayed in the media for as long as the Romani people have.

Please explain

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen this show and there's something I don't understand. I don't get how they're "Irish travelers" when the people on the show have stationary houses in the suburbs and trailers they never seem to travel in. What's the deal? Are they like snowbirds or something? Also, I don't understand how they make wages if they don't stay in one place.

Some Romani would argue that any that agree to be on a tv show aren't real gypsies, who are quite private about their culture.

I never watched it, but I can tell you straight away that you won't find a single redeeming feature, no matter how long you watch. You're not supposed to; that's what editing is for. If someone followed you around for months, pointing a camera at you for hours every day, and edited it so that they get 40 minutes of you at your absolute worst - how do you think you'd end up looking?

Look at Philippa Langley. That woman found the skeleton of fucking Richard III after years of meticulous research, and now she gets mocked for being a ~hysterical~ and over-invested fangirl. Why? Because that's what editing made her look like. Because that's how Channel 4 (originator of the Big Fat Gypsy Wedding format) sells shows. The same way tabloids sell their drivel. Because anger is the quickest way to get you emotionally invested. Who needs good drama or quality journalism if they can make millions getting you to hate minorities?

I thought the SJW would jump your shit if you used the word Gypsy. Isn't it supposed to have some negative racist associations?

Mayhaps it would be better to turn off the TV and do normal, not-insane research into the culture if you really don't want to be racist? Because I guarantee you that any sort of reality television will only continue to enforce not only specific prejudices but general misanthropy.

Gypsys broke into my fucking car when I was in Italy. No love. Not sorry.

Let me tell you a story, OP.

My dad worked at a local haunted house as a scary clown. He (strangely enough) became somewhat 'famous' both in our region and among the larger horror community. Famous enough that Wife Swap contacted our family to offer us a spot on the show.

We were going to be paid a fair amount of money, and filming would last a week iirc. It would be entirely scripted. My dad (who is actually just a totally normal person who dressed up once a year for this local show) would have to pretend to be a guy who wore his clown makeup all year round, was verbally abusive to his wife, had a home full of crazy Halloween shit, etc. Basically Ozzy's family but more redneck-y. My mom and I would have to act like we were also crazy. The money was tempting, but we decided none of us wanted people to think we were horrible freaks so we didn't do the show.

Shows like Wife Swap, Jersey Shore, Toddlers and Tiaras, Honey Boo Boo, this show.... None of them are real. At all. (Even the Reality TV shows that aren't totally scripted, like Deadliest Catch, are often edited in a way that makes events seem completely different than what actually happened.) These people are actors and they're being paid to be as outrageous as they can possibly be. Some of them like Snooki manage to gain enough of a following that they can continue making money off of their persona outside of the show, but that doesn't mean that's who they really are. You can't judge communities and cultures based on stupid TV shows.

I was under the impression that gypsy was an offensive exonym...and on that note I know damn near nothing about that culture, but I do know reality TV, and reality TV is not realistic. It plays up the worst, most offensive aspects of a group or event to garner ratings.

I'd take my information from more reputable sources than television, for better or worse, OP.
