Let me tell you a story, OP.

My dad worked at a local haunted house as a scary clown. He (strangely enough) became somewhat 'famous' both in our region and among the larger horror community. Famous enough that Wife Swap contacted our family to offer us a spot on the show.

We were going to be paid a fair amount of money, and filming would last a week iirc. It would be entirely scripted. My dad (who is actually just a totally normal person who dressed up once a year for this local show) would have to pretend to be a guy who wore his clown makeup all year round, was verbally abusive to his wife, had a home full of crazy Halloween shit, etc. Basically Ozzy's family but more redneck-y. My mom and I would have to act like we were also crazy. The money was tempting, but we decided none of us wanted people to think we were horrible freaks so we didn't do the show.

Shows like Wife Swap, Jersey Shore, Toddlers and Tiaras, Honey Boo Boo, this show.... None of them are real. At all. (Even the Reality TV shows that aren't totally scripted, like Deadliest Catch, are often edited in a way that makes events seem completely different than what actually happened.) These people are actors and they're being paid to be as outrageous as they can possibly be. Some of them like Snooki manage to gain enough of a following that they can continue making money off of their persona outside of the show, but that doesn't mean that's who they really are. You can't judge communities and cultures based on stupid TV shows.
