Please explain

I've seen this show and there's something I don't understand. I don't get how they're "Irish travelers" when the people on the show have stationary houses in the suburbs and trailers they never seem to travel in. What's the deal? Are they like snowbirds or something? Also, I don't understand how they make wages if they don't stay in one place.

"Travellers" is the traditional term for this cultural group, because until quite recently, that's what they did. Laws and times have changed, so now a lot of them stay in one place.

Traditionally, there was a lot of work for travellers (because most other people didn't travel anywhere) - fixing household and farm items, selling stuff that wasn't available in local shops, farm labour in busy seasons, shearing sheep, etc. Remember that most people were farmers, and farm work is extremely seasonal - sometimes you don't need many people and suddenly you need extra people RIGHT THE FUCK NOW before the fruit rots/crops die/wool agent leaves the area.
