For some reason, I really don't like it when people degrade their own intelligence. I find that in 90% of all the cases it hinders their progress and corresponds to the real state of affairs not at all.

Like, a person saying that they're "stupid"=instant irritation. Slow? Sure. Have trouble thinking logically? Okay. Stupid? NO. This adjective has so little meaning other than being an insult/a way of attention-seeking.

Yeah but...you know, that really doesn't stop people, especially ones with self-esteem or social anxiety problems, from feeling stupid or worrying that they appear stupid, even if they know they're not stupid.

Yep, true. Not dismissing social anxiety problems here. But, for what it's worth, I think the problem is also in the fact that the understanding of what intellect is often appears to be stiffly straightforward. Many make no distinction between potential and realization, or fail to see good aspects of otherwise bad works/texts/projects/speeches/etc. "He fails at all subjects lol he must be an idiot". "He has A+ in all subjects wow he is probably a genius".
