Too bad the show ruined her by A.) making her attractive (to be fair they've done this to all of the ugly characters) and B.) making her bloodthirsty and aggressive.

I'll grant you A) because Hollywood homely and maybe a tad bit more aggressive, but bloodthirsty? Are we watching the same Brienne?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-17 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Book Brienne wasn't killing people like show Brienne was. IIRC she was pretty naive about the whole thing.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-17 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt but I definitely think she's more aggro in the TV show than in the books.

DA

Yeah, I agree. I feel like they've missed capturing some of who she really is. She's not far off and still awesome in the show! But never having killed before was a big part of who her character was in the books.

She's not attractive though

(Anonymous) 2013-11-17 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
She's someone who if she "cleaned up" would be. The actress playing her is a model. The character in the book has broad, course features with swollen lips and is covered in freckles.

...freckles aren't attractive?

/sadface with freckles

(Anonymous) 2013-11-17 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I think freckles are adorable, but opinions vary a lot for some reason.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-17 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
that was my thing about her description in the books; all the features that were described as 'ugly' could just be a matter of taste or fashion. (tall, broad face, wide mouth, freckles, sturdy frame) Esp. since I seem to remember that most of the detailed description comes from Jaime...who's always been a one-woman man and that one woman's his twin, so what does he know? XD

(Anonymous) 2013-11-18 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Well IIRC Catelyn thinks Brienne is ugly too and feels bad for her because of it.

Not to mention that her nickname is Brienne the "Beauty."

(Anonymous) 2013-11-18 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Catelyn's standards of female beauty very rarely, if ever, stray beyond a.) making a fortuitous marriage b.) surviving childbirth- her one reassurance about Jeyne, and her qualms about whichever Frey they stuck Edmure with both come down the "quality" of their hips. I'm not really wanting more from her, it's pretty much to be expected of a high-born woman living in a medieval-esque patriarchy. And characters with the "expected" views on the standards of beauty and femininity have to exist for contrast with the characters who flout them.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-18 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's less the freckles by themselves but combined with the swollen lips, big teeth and broken nose.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-18 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Freckles are fantastically attractive but for some reason they often get considered a flaw, I really don't know why, people are strange and have strange opinions that I can't understand.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-18 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like freckles at all. YMMV

(Anonymous) 2013-11-18 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
I know, right?

With all the 6'3" tall blonde actresses willing to pack on the meat and learn swordplay just coming out of the woodwork, you would think they would've gotten an exact match!?

(Actually Gwen Christie's a pretty darn good fit. Sure, she's prettier than what most expected, but the truth is, we don't know how much of Briene's ugliness is due to just her looks, and to the fact that she doesn't fit the Westeros standard of petite pretty maiden with silky smooth hair and skin and perky bosom.

I can't argue the show character is slightly more bloodthirsty, but her core personality is still there, and she doesn't do anything crazy without a painfully plot-driven reason.)
