I don't like smauglock. I like the two fandoms separately. I don't need dragon Sherlock and hobbit John having sex in my life. I'm good.

I just don't go into that section of fandom and so far it hasn't found me.

As a casual reader of the book, Smaug and Bilbo is not a pairing that would have occurred to me. In fact, it's a pairing I could have lived without ever knowing existed (let alone was popular enough to get a name for it.) Then again, if they're calling it "Smauglock," I get the impression Bilbo's actual characterization is somewhat irrelevant compared to the hotness of the actor . . .

I don't think Smaug/Bilbo appears to most people who read the books. I think it's a Benedict Cumberbatch fandom thing.

I am not sure how people would pull off Bilbo/Smaug in character. I think people just found a way to ship Sherlock/John in The Hobbit and ran with it.

I'm pretty sure literally no one at ALL shipped Smaug/Bilbo till the movie came out, and I'm absolutely sure that the ONLY reason people are doing it now is because they really, really want to see the two actors do it.

*til Cumberbatch was cast. It started immediately after Martin Freeman leaked the casting. We don't see Smaug or hear him speak until the next movie.

And dragons in Middle-earth. Smaug destroyed Laketown because Bilbo stole a thing from him, Smauglock just suggests they solve crime/fight evil together.
