Sometimes I think that stuff is kind of cute and sometimes I'm like... ehhh, no. You shouldn't have to squee if you don't want to. I'd consider a killjoy to be someone who actively hates on someone's fun, not someone who just ignores it. So, as long as you are just ignoring it, that's cool.

On day Hobbit John got an egg from a special "friend" of his. Naturally he supposed it to be an advanced sex toy (judging by the size and texture etc.), so he secured a gallon of extra slippery lube before he locked his round door and rubber-sheeted his cozy round bed. Anticipation had worked its magic on his (pretty experienced, to be fair) sphincter all day, so when he proceeded to insert the thing, there wasn't much resistance to be found. John; thus content, sighed and moaned a little and relaxed around the intrusion. He wasn't planning to fall asleep that way, far from it, yet he was badly started by a loud cracking noise, a funny and wholly novel feeling in his innards - and most disturbingly of all - a high pitched, yet velvety voice calling out behind him: "Rawr?" (clearly meaning: Mommy?)

Well, I actually hate it, and I don't care if people think I'm a killjoy for it. I don't go around telling others they can't like what they like, but I don't have to lie about how I feel.

I guess I don't really know, but I was under the impression that most Smauglock is meant as tongue-in-cheek? I think it's hilariously silly, but that isn't enough to get me to really go and look at any of it closely enough to get a feel for the intentions of the fandom.

I can't really enjoy the Hobbit buzz this year because I'm so tired of Benedict Cumberbatch. I like him as an actor, and I have nothing specifically against him. It's just that he's fucking everywhere. His fans are everywhere, even in fandoms that have nothing to do with him. His haters are everywhere, too. I could use a year or so of not seeing his face, hearing is voice, or reading his name. That would be cool.

If some one is giving you shit for not falling all over yourself with feels and squees, fuck 'em. However if you're going out of your way to attack the artist directly or treating them badly for drawing something you find stupid, that's not cool either. This is a generic "you", not directly about the OP. Anyway I've seen some folks whine that some people in fandom "demand" they like something or they treat them badly... but often it wasn't about that. It was because those folks were actively mocking the artist, the art, and people for enjoying it. It's bad to be an ass if some one isn't squeeing over the same things as you, but it's also bad to mock people for enjoying something you don't.

I agree. Even going beyond this example (which is pretty much everything I hate about that sort of stuff), I am honestly freaked out by the extreme displays of OMG SO CUUUUTEEEEE in fandom. I'd be fine if it was just a thing that some people do, everyone's different, but then there's all those "if you don't squee at this you have no heart" posts. It's not enough to like something, you have to like it exactly in a certain way or you're doing it wrong.

Also, slightly off topic, but what's with people who are into overly saccharine things often being so poisonous otherwise? At least in my experience. Did I meet all the bad ones?
