I think that's the problem, both she and her readers are doing this. What she did was take a personal story about her personal experience with depression and present it like The Depression Experience(tm), then people reacted like "now I know what Depression Is Like!" and ran off to enlighten their friends.

But to some people, depression actually is like that. If someone else made a comic about their own (different) experience with depression and people reblogged it en masse, people who had the Allie Brosh experience would also complain "My depression is different, they all pretend that that comic is The Depression Experience(tm)!".

Happens with all kinds of things. Like all those "OMG, this is my terrible period problem story" and all those guys seeing it on tumblr and going "omg, so that's how it's like" while a lot of other women go "Nah, not really".

This. She's sharing her experiences. They aren't necessarily the same as everyone's. I thought that was a given (but maybe that's because I also have depression)
