Re: Legend of Korra Finale - what did you think?

[personal profile] sootyowl 2013-11-17 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
These are some of my thoughts on ep 13&14 from my tumblr:

What I liked:

- Korra really grew up this season. She' a different young woman then the angry teenager she was before. She was in control and a leader in ep 13 &14.

- Tenzin/Korra. There relationship has grown SO DAMN MUCH. Like he’s an amazing mentor to her again. Putting all his trust in Korra to decide if spirits and humans should be as one again. He knew he could trust her to make the right decision. The problems that they had in the beginning of S2 are gone. He knows that Korra is formidable and a great Avatar in her own right. He sees what she has become and is so proud.

- Korra and Mako breaking up. I liked them together at the beginning, but they need to grow and be separate people. The second Asam/Korra/Mako triangle shouldn't have happened. It wasted Korra ass kicking time. I think Mako and Asami should take a break as well, so they can both find themselves too.

- It looks like the krew might be back in better form next season. I love the Kataang family moments, but I do miss the gaang family feeling that LoK doesn’t have.

- Korra

What I disliked:

- Bolin/Eska. There relationship was meant for laughs and didn't work for me. I get that Bolin re-confessed his love for Eska as they thought they were going to die, but it was handled poorly. I’m glad it’s over. I also hope Bolin grows next season. I didn’t like S2 Bolin much when it came to his female relationships. Ginger and him were the worst.

- The probability that Asami and Mako will still be together next season without discussion of Mako/Korra. They need new people to be with as well.

- Eska and Desna totally not caring thAT THEIR DAD DIED. He was a shitty dad, but a moment of mourning would have been nice.

- Mako and Asami not having enough character development.

yeah, that bugged me a bit too. like, in the previous episode they were talking about how we was the wisest man in the world and that what he did was probably for the best. I mean, I get that their dad was a shitty person and an undeniably horrible father and the twins are kind of emotionless but the "lol no we don't give a shit that he's dead" was still a bit...idk. I like to think that they did grieve a little bit in private in their own way. it's just hard to imagine that they felt absolutely nothing after the death of a man that they were loyal to beyond reason

I think that by the time he actually died, they had already written him off. I was just frustrated they didn't do it sooner. With all those little glances they were giving each other, I was expecting them to kill him before Korra even got there. One thing I found interesting was that after the fusion, people were referring to him as "it". He'd completely lost his humanity, and I think that's when Eska and Desna thought, "This isn't our father anymore." The "wisest man" stuff was probably them being in deep denial. I really doubt he gave them much affection, to be honest, and maybe they were desperate for it.

They seemed to love Unalaq in the previous episode and stood by his side, which was what I had issue with. They went from "we must stand by father" to "eh." It was a dramatic change. They did seem to know that he had a few screws loose, but they said they saw what a great man their father was.

I do think you make a good point that they thought Unavaatu wasn't their father anymore. Still, he did die.

Yeah, the show didn't go into it enough (then again, it's not their show) which is why I'm filling in the spaces with my interpretations. So all the praise they were heaping on him? I'm calling it denial.

It'd be interesting to see it explored in fic. Maybe they're different when nobody else is around. And how will they explain it to their mother? Did we ever even see their mother? What is she like? What type of reaction are they expecting?

I might just be weirdly fascinated with them.

I'll agree with you on denial. I'd love to read a fic where Desna and Eska break down and have to finally deal with their fathers death, their mistreatment, and what he was trying to achieve.

I don't think we did see their mom? Maybe she passed when they were young? Or she didn't have a standing in the story so Bryke and co. didn't find the urge to put her in the show.

They're interesting characters. I can see why you would be. I am too.

Well, Eska made the comment "How we will explain this to mother?" so I think she's alive. I think if their mother was in the spirit world somewhere/already reincarnated it would matter that much.

Ohhh, right! Now I want fic of Desna and Eska's home life and how their mother ties into everything.

Yesss, I also wanna see them interacting with Korra when they were kids.

That would be great. I can picture them getting into trouble and torturing Korra, who fights dirty back. Or maybe they were all really cute trouble makers and it changed when D&E got older and Unalaq got more of a hold on them.

+1 on Tenzin and Korra, and I loved that Tenzin still had his own lessons to learn. I think my favorite thing about this series is how it portrays adult characters.

I've always been dissatisfied with the canon romance, though.

When Tenzin was in the spirit mist and realized he wasn't his father and that he had been trying to live up to a image of Aang, was great. I would watch a series that focused on Tenzin, Kya, and Bumi.

Yeah, canon romance in LoK has been bad. I get that they're teenagers, but the love triangle by the end had out stayed its welcome.

I felt that way even in AtLa, though. That's probably why I shipped everything when I was in that fandom and wrote a ton of (awful) fic.

I actually found the love triangle stuff pretty easy to ignore during these last few episodes. Like compared to the cool origin story and the kickass animation and the rest of the plot, it didn't really get that much screen time.

I wish Ginger hadn't kissed Bolin, though. My own headcanon aside (I was reading her as gay, yes, I know they'd never go there who cares), I would like for once to have a girl reject a guy and not change her mind. Oh she says she's not interested, well just KEEP PUSHING IT and then maybe one day you can impress her with your heroics and your muscles (not that this was his goal at all, he really was saving the day) and suddenly she'll love you, also what did Bolin plan on telling her when he showed up in Republic City married to Eska and Desna argh, dumbass.

That said, I love Bolin.

I liked the pairings in A:TLA. I know a lot of people disagree with me, haha.

The last four episodes, it was easy to ignore. It was during Mako centric episodes, when the love triangle reared its head.

Ginger kissing Bolin was the worst. It negated her telling him off and her right as a woman to do so. It made her into a money/power grubbing hussy trope, instead of a women who you know, just wasn't interested. I was so displeased with that.

I love Bolin too, bad season 2 track record aside. And I was totally down for Eska/Bolin/Desna at the beginning. Okay and maybe I still am.

I don't mind the pairings themselves (I ship pretty much everything), it was more the way they got together. It's just not the strongest part of the writing, in my opinion.

YES you hit the nail on the head with Ginger. They should've kept her as a background character tbph.

And I was totally down for Eska/Bolin/Desna at the beginning. Okay and maybe I still am.

Yeaaaaah, it was massively unhealthy and I'm still not sure what the writers were going for but I still want fic.

I get that. I like Zuko/Mai, but I think Mai would make a terrible queen. I can't see it. I do love Aang/Katara. I just think it's sweet. Suki/Sokka I also like, and I think Azula/Ty Lee would have been awesome. Even Ty Lee/Azula/Mai. I really want fic for them that explores visiting Azula in jail. They'd hate her, maybe pity her, but still be drawn to her.

It was sooooooooooo unhealthy. I was telling Bolin to run for the hills while hoping Eska would tie him down and have her (+ Desna) way with him.
