Legend of Korra Finale - what did you think?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-17 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I really enjoyed the last four episodes but now that I have had some time to think about it, I'm less excited. What did everyone else think?

Re: Legend of Korra Finale - what did you think?

I'm pretending the entire second season doesn't exist, and the show only had one season

Really? The first season was bad, if not worse than the second.

Personal opinion. I loved the first season, sanz the love triangle mess of course. The second season was just a meandering mess with a muahaha villain who had no depth, the annoying love triangle crapx2, an annoying reversal on character development, and an airbender Jesus ending. It was just insanely awful.

I'm pretending the entire series ended after episode eight or so, get on my level ;)

So sad. So much potential. Too bad that that really good show (aside from that one love triangle episode) got cancelled so soon, it might have been really good if they had stuck with it!

I haven't decided if I want to watch season 2 yet, cause it looks like they're trying to make me hate everyone and I'm not even sure the main cast are friends with each other

Re: Legend of Korra Finale - what did you think?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-17 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
That's how I feel. In ATLA, it really felt like the gaang were friends. Here, Mako lies to Korra and Asami, Bolin treats Mako like crap, Asami acts catty to Korra because of Mako and then goes back to him the moment she finds out Korra is out of the picture, and Korra went after Mako when he was dating Asami. They just...aren't friends.

I'm still squeeing over the last four episodes; I felt like those episodes gave me most of the things the writers had been cruelly denying me all season.

These are some of my thoughts on ep 13&14 from my tumblr:

What I liked:

- Korra really grew up this season. She' a different young woman then the angry teenager she was before. She was in control and a leader in ep 13 &14.

- Tenzin/Korra. There relationship has grown SO DAMN MUCH. Like he’s an amazing mentor to her again. Putting all his trust in Korra to decide if spirits and humans should be as one again. He knew he could trust her to make the right decision. The problems that they had in the beginning of S2 are gone. He knows that Korra is formidable and a great Avatar in her own right. He sees what she has become and is so proud.

- Korra and Mako breaking up. I liked them together at the beginning, but they need to grow and be separate people. The second Asam/Korra/Mako triangle shouldn't have happened. It wasted Korra ass kicking time. I think Mako and Asami should take a break as well, so they can both find themselves too.

- It looks like the krew might be back in better form next season. I love the Kataang family moments, but I do miss the gaang family feeling that LoK doesn’t have.

- Korra

What I disliked:

- Bolin/Eska. There relationship was meant for laughs and didn't work for me. I get that Bolin re-confessed his love for Eska as they thought they were going to die, but it was handled poorly. I’m glad it’s over. I also hope Bolin grows next season. I didn’t like S2 Bolin much when it came to his female relationships. Ginger and him were the worst.

- The probability that Asami and Mako will still be together next season without discussion of Mako/Korra. They need new people to be with as well.

- Eska and Desna totally not caring thAT THEIR DAD DIED. He was a shitty dad, but a moment of mourning would have been nice.

- Mako and Asami not having enough character development.

yeah, that bugged me a bit too. like, in the previous episode they were talking about how we was the wisest man in the world and that what he did was probably for the best. I mean, I get that their dad was a shitty person and an undeniably horrible father and the twins are kind of emotionless but the "lol no we don't give a shit that he's dead" was still a bit...idk. I like to think that they did grieve a little bit in private in their own way. it's just hard to imagine that they felt absolutely nothing after the death of a man that they were loyal to beyond reason

Re: Legend of Korra Finale - what did you think?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-17 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that by the time he actually died, they had already written him off. I was just frustrated they didn't do it sooner. With all those little glances they were giving each other, I was expecting them to kill him before Korra even got there. One thing I found interesting was that after the fusion, people were referring to him as "it". He'd completely lost his humanity, and I think that's when Eska and Desna thought, "This isn't our father anymore." The "wisest man" stuff was probably them being in deep denial. I really doubt he gave them much affection, to be honest, and maybe they were desperate for it.

+1 on Tenzin and Korra, and I loved that Tenzin still had his own lessons to learn. I think my favorite thing about this series is how it portrays adult characters.

I've always been dissatisfied with the canon romance, though.

When Tenzin was in the spirit mist and realized he wasn't his father and that he had been trying to live up to a image of Aang, was great. I would watch a series that focused on Tenzin, Kya, and Bumi.

Yeah, canon romance in LoK has been bad. I get that they're teenagers, but the love triangle by the end had out stayed its welcome.

Thoughts:
Unalaq - I really wanted a redemption or at least some more perspective on why he was doing what he was doing. I guess he was just a lot like Ozai but I really wanted him to feel like a real person. And I wanted something more with his kids and his family. I also don't feel like I got the catharsis I needed when Korra defeated him because it wasn't really "him" she defeated. He just disappeared into Vaatu. His arc just feels unfinished to me.

Jinora - what the heck did she do at the end? I was really disappointed that Korra didn't manage to win on her own. If she really needed help, Jinora's great but what did she do? Where did she go? I was unhappy with that.

I was also unhappy that Korra lost her connection to her past lives. I hope she can get it back, but I hope they do that in the last few episodes of the series as I think it's good for her to have to figure things out on her own.

I thought it was great that she left the spirit portals open. There's going to be a lot of conflict from that, especially as the world is becoming more industrialized. I also like that the spirit world lets us see some past characters from ATLA.

Overall I really liked the finale episodes but one of my favorite little things was the callback to Zhao (and also the reference to the professor in episode 10). I always kind of wondered what exactly happened to him and I thought his fate was satisfying

It made me really hate Asami. That look she gives Korra after Korra kisses Mako, just really? Even if Korra hadn't lost her memory, how would Korra know that Asami went after Mako the moment she got the chance? It was -one week-. It's why I'm really not buying the 'Asami Korra friendship' stuff from s3 that is apparently coming.

I thought she was giving that look to Mako. I was too. Lying to someone who has amnesia is pretty fucked up.

I thought it was directed at Korra, since she made it after she kissed him?

da and I thought it was more towards Mako for letting it happen by not backing away from her and going on to not telling her they broke up.

Ending was blah, but at least they tried to resolve some storylines.

Felt like they had to come up with more stuff to pull out of their asses to keep the story going.

I like how Varrick built a jail cell for himself

not for "any wealthy or upperclass prisoners who happen to end up here and want it"

specifically for himself

and nobody found this suspicious or believed, when there was evidence, that he was even remotely capable of being a criminal.

I would say more but most things have already been discussed and I need to get off dreamwidth for a little bit.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed it.

He's eccentric as hell. Him having a cell "jussstttt in case" would get stares and shrugs, it'd be Varrick being Varrick to most.

Because I do not have anywhere to post a review that won't just be me shouting at nothing, I shall let loose all my feelings about the final here:

1.) I quite liked that Mako and Korra finally just broke it off for good. Their relationship was "fun while it lasts but not good for them, especially in the long run". I hope they can all be functional friends without romantic bullshit in the next season. And for all that there was a lot of romantic crap during this season, for the most part it got steadily pushed to the side as more pressing matters took over, which was also a plus.

2.) WTF was up with Jinora? What did she do? Was it just Little (white/pale) Girl Purity that somehow gave Korra the boost? I got the impression that Jinora actively went somewhere and did something to help Korra, but what?

3.) Yay for adult development throughout the series. One thing I have always appreciated about ATLA was that everyone got some kind of development, even if they were older and ostensibly good guys, and no one's character was "static" or "already developed" - even Iroh got some, however less it was in comparison to everyone else. The character developments of Tenzin, Kya, and Bumi were nice to watch, especially Tenzin - he tries to be a Wise Old Man for Korra, but still has a long way to go, himself, and probably always will. I love that it shows even these significantly older people as having their own journeys to go through even as they help the younger characters move through theirs.

4.) DAFUQ was that with Bolin and Eska at the end? I spent that scene totally looking forward to this being a showcasing of Bolin's acting talent - that he had managed to develop acting talent and wasn't just a convenient buff guy for Varrick's movie/mover* and could actually develop a talent and life outside of earthbending, and then suddenly...what? He just suddenly has strong feelings for her? Was that some latent Stockholm Syndrome or something? I just do not buy that whole "caught up in the moment during the end of the world" bullshit. Hell, Bolin getting into a (real) relationship with Ginger would probably be, at the very least no backwards movement and in line with how his character has developed already - for all that he is still loyal to his friends and all, he enjoys the high life and the perks of being rich and famous. With the way he was at the end, enjoying a brief fling with a hot girl would've been in line with his character (and it would've been a brief fling that lasted about as long as the fame and prestige of saving the president, or at least Ginger's perception of it.

* = why don't they just call it a movie in-universe? Mover makes me think of the guys who come by your house on moving day to collect and transport your stuff. Or possibly whoever Varrick hired to steal Asami's stuff.

5.) Yay for all the worldbuilding, from the new in-universe technological advancements (movers, remote detonation, etc) to callbacks to the previous series (the Professor in the library, Zhao, etc). Definitely love all these little details and references (though yikes, I feel sorry for all those other people in the Fog of Lost Souls in the Spirit world).

6.) Slightly more general thing, BUT...I'm not sure how to feel about this whole cosmic epic type story they were going for. I've always liked how grounded in the real world ATLA was, how even though it was a clear fantasy it wasn't one based on the abstraction of cosmic or supernatural forces, but supported by them to focus on the complexity of a real-world story. The first season of LOK did even better on that front, confronting real world issue that even modern viewers can identify with and still keeping that fantasy background and influence. But this shift from realistic worldly issues - civil war, political maneuvering, business problems, etc - to cosmic battles for the fate of the world was jarring, both within the season and the show itself. I greatly enjoyed the Journey Into History flashbacks letting us know about War at first because of how it built up the world and background, and gave an opportunity for Korra to learn about her past and herself. But instead of that being a foundation on which to continue the story like it tended to be in ATLA, it became the foundation of its own story, sidetracking considerably from everything else that's been going on.
