This.

I also love that the show runners deliberately got as many non-white people on the cast as possible, talking about how you choose person a,b,c for the 'main' people and then you get to villains all there is left is non-white people so - non-white villains, and they didn't want to go there.

That was another thing they did very, very well. And then they lampshaded it. Abbie's a black woman. They're not going to go on about it or have those two things be her only characteristics, but they're going to point out that she'll threaten to shoot anybody dumb enough to act a fool towards her. Like, it's part of what makes her Abbie Mills, but it's not the ONLY thing defining her.

I liked the conversation about Thomas Jefferson too.

YES. She's not A BLACK WOMAN COP. She's a woman, who is a cop, who is black. I like that they haven't made her being a woman in charge or a *black* woman a 'thing' with Ichabod, either.

Oh, yes, me too. That was good. AS was the Paul Revere rant. Heee!

I am so so sick and tired of shows where a character who has some minority adjective (gay, black, or woman are the most common) attached IS the adjective and that's it. Sleepy Hollow doesn't jump up and down and wave its arms and scream OUR CHARACTER IS BLACK WE ARE GREAT! or OUR CHARACTER IS A WOMAN WE ARE SO FEMINIST!
Instead, it just has characters who go around fighting monsters and having wacky adventures with plastics and cars, and Abby's woman-ness and is no more a Thing than Ichabod's man-ness.

And it just so happens that working it our this way makes the characters more realistic and more fun to watch. And even though I'm usually a stickler for historical details, this is my new favorite show.

Exactly! I'm not super-picky about details on a tv show, but as goofy and utterly unreal as SH is, i LOVE IT. Because, yes - the characters are so much more real and likable and awesome.

Actually I think it more that she is cop who is a woman and who happens to be black.

Yes, you're probably right. :)
