absolutely agreed, anon! AUs are my favorite kind of fanfic, especially the silly cliche ones :)

AUs are generally my favorite too. I'll read almost anything, but love those.

I like most of them and think they can be really fun, but it's annoying when they get more prolific than canon fic. Writing quality and characterization varies just like any other kind of fic.

I like some of these (mostly the fantasy, space, pirate, etc ones*), but I've grown tired of coffee shop AU's and high school and college AU's don't hold much interest for me anymore. Not that I won't ever read them, but often they're just boring compared to the source material. And the characters need to be pretty spot on or it gets frustrating.

But a good AU can be a godsend, yea.

(*Though, wth, where are all the pirate AU's? I never see them! I want some damn pirate AU's.)

And these are the things I most avoid. I like AUs that slightly change canon, but personally when I'm reading fics about a particular fandom I want them to actually be set in that world. That being said, there are occasionally some of these type of AUs I enjoy (I read a really awesome Grey's Anatomy superhero AU once). But 90% of the ones I see have made the characters completely unrecognizable.

Me too, anon. Not all of them, but I love some good AU.

Where's this list from?

My big weakness is the Fandom AU. I generally don't read fic for fandoms I'm not in, but I'll read any fandom's Fandom AUs. :)

See, sometimes they seem to get a little insipid to me. As it is I started writing an "AU" fic that seems to have warped into "kinda AU but really just between seasons in a very different setting."

Though I still kinda want to just switch it to full AU. Just don't know HOW.

Me too, OP. :D

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I have read and loved almost all of those. I prefer canon-based stuff, but AUs can be really fun.

Except for hookerfic. I have never ever understood the appeal. But to each their own.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
There's a lot of AUs I like and a bunch I don't care for.

One thing I don't admit often: I do love me some hookerfic.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Why is this a secret? Judging by how much of this stuff exists, a lot of people seem to love it.

I'm a sucker for a well-done 'always been the opposite sex' genderswap AU, same for vampire AUs especially if they're fusions with a vampire canon I already like.

One of my favorite fics in one of my smaller (but top) fandoms is kind of a fandom AU, though it's them as in canon only also in fandom, mistaken identities and such ensue.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I can understand some of the hate AUS get... but a well-done AU fic is the BEST.

I think my favourite type is the AU where some detail is changed that has a massive effect on the story/characters. (Dunno what you'd call that.)

Also, I love coffee-shop AUs. Not even sorry.

I'm not a fan of AUs, but I've been trying to write one for an exchange and it isn't going well. I really like fics that are like the source material, only with the pairing I ship.

Judging from the high hit counts/kudos, AUs are popular.

I feel you, OP! I love AUs so much, I practically hoard them when it comes to my current main fandom. uwu

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
I freaking love Regency and Western AU. They make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Oh! And 1930s/The Mummy/Indiana Jones archaeology AU, but that's not as common.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
I love high school AUs so much that when I couldn't find one for one of my fandoms, I started writing one myself. You're not alone, OP.

I mostly avoid them because, as others have said, a lot of them lose track of who the characters are, have no connection to the world details I love the canon material for, and are so common that there's more mediocre to badly done examples than good ones.

Still, I occasionally do read them, and even find good ones! Occasionally.

I still favour Canon divergence or "For Want Of A Nail" AUs, or reincarnation AUs (which can combine elements of modern AUs with stuff from canon).
