I can understand some of the hate AUS get... but a well-done AU fic is the BEST.

I think my favourite type is the AU where some detail is changed that has a massive effect on the story/characters. (Dunno what you'd call that.)

Also, I love coffee-shop AUs. Not even sorry.

I just looked it up the other day and it turns out that the second type of AU you mentioned is called "For Want of A Nail AU".
