I don't see what is so wrong with being a creator's pet. Sure, the romance angle with Rose got old fast, but she was an awesome character nevertheless. And she wasn't perfect. She made mistakes, as did Amy. As did every other companion. They all have their strengths and weaknesses, and they are all awesome yet different. I do feel like sometimes Donna got the short end of the straw (Jack not wanting to hug her pissed me off so much since it was completely out of character for Jack), but in general I think the companions have been treated equally in terms of the creator loving them and giving them an interesting story in their own right.

Donna was so awesome - I have no idea why they did that with Jack. And I do not think I will ever be over her having her memory erased.

Now that I think about that Jack bit, it makes me think it's a bit of a gag - Jack is hitting on everyone most of the time, so the one time he's not hitting on someone? She's hitting on him!

I thought it was meant to be in the context of the earlier scene in the show when Ianto questioned Jack about a meeting he'd had with a soldier and Jack reassured him it was strictly professional, Donna was really trying to hit on him and he was just being cool, given they had Gwen and Ianto on their cameras at the time. If it had been platonic hugging he would have been fine.
