Honestly, I can't help but think that DW might do better with a show runner who DIDN'T grow up with the show, and thus doesn't use being a show runner as a way to fulfill his or her fantasies about the The Doctor and/or his compactions, which I kind of feel like both RJD and Moffat have done.

Agreed 100%. This is also why I can't stand Tennant, because there's just way too much "WATCH MEEE DOO THIS THANG YO YO YO MY TEN-YEARS-OLD SELF IS SO VINDICATED RN" vibe, no matter how hard he tried to actually do the job. Example, there was a gif set going around Tumblr with Tennant and the "I don't want to go" whinefest scene, where he's sitting behind the scenes, going "I just don't think I injected ENOUGH emotion into it" -- to which Tumblr collectively replied, "It could have been worse?? Are you kidding me??"

Same thing with Moffat's writing. It is painfully bad fanfic, unbeta'd fanfic, at that.

Didn't someone post an interview with Capaldi (12/13) saying he wasn't really a fan of the show? Let's just hope the next showrunner is the same.

LMAO.

CAPALDI IS A HUGE FAN OF THE SHOW.

Here's a collection of articles and stuff about that: http://ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com/80376598.html

It's actually pretty funny.

*scratches head* Now I'm wondering what I read...ah well. Here's hoping he doesn't end up being in the same position as Colin Baker, in that case. (Yeah yeah I liked Six tell me how strange I am :-P)

Oh, no, that wouldn't work either.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
See: the wank about JJ Abrams and Star Trek. I don't think there is anyway to win here. You're either too much of a fan (with your fanboy fantasies) or not enough of one (you just don't get it).

Re: Oh, no, that wouldn't work either.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
JJ's probably wasn't that he wasn't a Star Trek fanboy, but that he was a Star Wars fanboy. He tried to turn Trek into Wars, which is just not happening. And then what ever fanboys wrote Into Darkness just dredged up old water.

I think you have to understand the spirit of the series but not fixate on it. So like, a casual fan or not a fan that can research what the creators were trying to do.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Not to mention Moffat is Verity Lamberts son in law, so they are incredibly embroiled.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-20 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. Just cos they have the same surname, doesn't mean they're related.

What's so wrong with a creator loving their character?

That said, it's hilarious to me when people claim that Rose is a self-insert character for RTD.
fauxkaren: (Default)

[personal profile] fauxkaren 2013-11-19 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
It's also amusing to me when people complain about Rose "keep coming back" because like. Donna was just a one-off who came back for her own series and then again she returned to the show in End of Time. And Martha came back twice on Doctor Who in series 4 after she'd left the Tardis. AND she also had a three episode arc on Torchwood. (and had the cameo in End of Time)

Rose left in series 2. Came back at the end of series 4 (+cameo in EoT). And now is coming back for the 50th.

Jack GOT HIS OWN SHOW and then after that returned to the mothership for two appearances and also the EoT cameo.

But people seem to really harp on Rose's returns while ignoring every one else.

[personal profile] philstar22 2013-11-19 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I think for some of us the issue is less "she kept coming back" and more "she was the focus even when it wasn't her turn". Martha's season was a whole lot about her. Donna's season was a lot about Rose returning even before she came back (and also about Martha coming back again).

That being said, that says nothing about Rose herself or her character. I just think she was the first companion RTD wrote, and she had special meaning for him. Rose is awesome, its just that some of the stuff around her wasn't always so much.

And I actually do think Jack was almost as special to him. Donna, not so much. Yes, she was a one-off who came back, but half her episodes included another companion and there were random put downs that made no sense (Jack not hugging her for example). That was less about her not being Rose, though, and more about the New Who bias against older companions. Which is just as much Moffatt's issue, if not more so.

I agree with this. I like Rose but I love all the companions and I wish she hadn't overshadowed some of the others as much as she did.

Well, I eyerolled at those moments because I found Rose's returns more annoying than anyone else's. It wasn't just about frequency or number of returns, it's that Rose is always worshipped as the One True Companion and that got old really fast.

To be fair, I never really understood the Rose-as-Mary-Sue argument, either.

The thing I didn't appreciate was turning "adventures in time and space" into Low Space Opera by way of Eastenders. Which is why I much preferred Donna and the Doctor, until I heard about all the politics behind the scenes, which ruined it for me. But the writing was much better during that run, than it was with the whole melodrama/space opera thing the reboot has tended to go overboard with.

If someone refers to any character as a Mary Sue, I automatically disregard anything they might have to say.

And... I think you are grossly over exaggerating the romance angle. Sure, there was some, obviously. But it didn't mean that the show stopped being about adventures in space and time.

What politics? I haven't heard anything. Donna has always been my favorite companion. And I agree that the writing was better that run, partly because I think Ten worked better with someone who questioned him and yelled at him when he needed it.

I don't see what is so wrong with being a creator's pet. Sure, the romance angle with Rose got old fast, but she was an awesome character nevertheless. And she wasn't perfect. She made mistakes, as did Amy. As did every other companion. They all have their strengths and weaknesses, and they are all awesome yet different. I do feel like sometimes Donna got the short end of the straw (Jack not wanting to hug her pissed me off so much since it was completely out of character for Jack), but in general I think the companions have been treated equally in terms of the creator loving them and giving them an interesting story in their own right.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Donna was so awesome - I have no idea why they did that with Jack. And I do not think I will ever be over her having her memory erased.

Now that I think about that Jack bit, it makes me think it's a bit of a gag - Jack is hitting on everyone most of the time, so the one time he's not hitting on someone? She's hitting on him!

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought it was meant to be in the context of the earlier scene in the show when Ianto questioned Jack about a meeting he'd had with a soldier and Jack reassured him it was strictly professional, Donna was really trying to hit on him and he was just being cool, given they had Gwen and Ianto on their cameras at the time. If it had been platonic hugging he would have been fine.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Completely agree OP.

I don't dislike Rose, but I would rank both her and Martha below Donna, Amy, River, and even Clara as far as my personal favorites. Seasons four and five are still my favorite seasons. Things kinda went off the rails though in six.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't care for either of them, actually.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like Moffat as a show runner, BUT I liked Amy - the criticism of creator's pet would more apply to Clara probably (though I liked her as well, shame she couldn't be on at the same time as Amy, Rory and River - they would make a hell of a team). Only character I did not like? 11th. 9th had been a total bastard but always my favourite (hadn't seen much of the older series - only what have been posted on the internet before youtube and my fav had been Romana, didn't connect with any doctor) - 11 takes the award for the worst arsehole though.

As for Rose, I enjoyed her plot-line - she went from an ordinary girl no one gives a damn about to bloody important. Her and 9 were my OTP ... okay, no, Everyone with Everyone were :D. I admit, RTD went a bit overboard with 10's loss and all that. Still, Donna had a similar run along with Martha ... so ...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Rose was a creator's pet. Amy was like a creator's plot device, River was more of the pet.... idk I don't think Moffat cared about either of his ladies enough for them to be creator pets. More like cliches... oh they spend their whole lives waiting for the doctor, oh river marries the doctor, oh river and amy are related. what a twist~
