Cecil falls in love with Carlos in the first episode. They could get one episode in, see it, and leave if they don't like it.

regrettably they seem to be one of those sorts of people who HAVE to complain about not liking something. They can't just let something be because it's not for them, are you kidding? asking them to keep it to themselves would be 'silence their voice' and taking away their rights! *le gasp*

I see a lot of those type online but they are abundant in real life too. Also Homophobia.

Yeah, I know people are like that. I'm just saying that I don't understand that urge. I also don't understand someone not liking something and then continuing to consume whatever media the thing is if they don't like it. I know other people do this too.

I guess I'm just frustrated because I recognize people are like that but I can't figure a logical reason why. Because I keep thinking they have to get something out of it.

DA

It's not logical. It's purely emotional... and sometimes just knowing in your gut that the media could be better without the writer's insane urge to include X, Y, Z in what was otherwise a fantastic piece.

That you like X, Y, Z or that a large percentage of the group consuming that piece of media doesn't mind X, Y, Z is neither here nor there. (Or you're just dead wrong and lack any semblance of taste. It depends how confrontational the person's opinions are.)

Ah, I see. Emotional. But doesn't there have to be some kind of... reward for that behavior? Something to make them want to do it again? Some positive... reinforcement or something?

It's more like... catharsis.

Which is rewarding in and of itself even if the thing doesn't change itself to conform to your demands.

Aaaahhhhh catharsis. That I can understand.

You know, thank you for taking the time to explain this to me. It really helps and I appreciate it.

No problem!

I read a book sporking regarding a particular author because I like the sporker and the discussion in the sporking journal. I've read the books that they're bitter about but I'm more 'meh' myself. (Although I totally get into the discussions and the spork because Ideas!)

It's given me a lot of time to think about the phenomenon.

(Although, yeah, there's a ton of bitterness involved too. Again, because there was great love and now it's great hate. You've got to let off steam somehow and that's certainly one way..)

Ah, sporkings. I remember those. Mostly I remember some of them making me giggle because of the jokes. I want to say, "They're still around?" but of course they have to be.

Hmmm, but yeah, that makes sense. It seems so clear now that you explain it but I was truly baffled before. Ah, hindsight is 20/20 and unforgiving. Anyway, thanks again.

AYART

I don't usually read/watch the first of anything. I go for about the third book/episode in the series. So, if the complainer is like me, it might be awhile before he/she discovers the thing that he/she doesn't like.

That said, I'm totally changing my mental picture of WTNV from 'creepy small town radio doings' to 'creepy small town radio romance'.

Eh, whenever Carlos is mentioned Cecil gushes. He isn't in every episode though so maybe? But he's at least mentioned... every three episodes? Four? Something like that I think.

Ah, so you haven't heard the podcast yourself? I would stay with your first impression. The romance is still a small part. It took a year for Carlos to even reciprocate Cecil's feelings and that was in-between episodes where he wasn't mentioned at all. I think there's only one episode solely dedicated to him and that's because it's the date episode.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
I waffle about it. It's actually been up in a tab for the last two weeks so I'm probably inching closer to listening to at least a couple of episodes.

Part of the reason that I'm leery is that I loathe the wank and the apparent need of the entire fanbase to tattle about X's Non-Party Line Opinions or Y's Image of Carlos or Cecil or Whatever that doesn't *exactly* match mine. Plus, I like to write rare pairs and I always post everything I write under the same name. So yeah, if I get into WTNV I'll get figuratively stoned at some point.

Ah, well, I hope you like it but if you don't that's okay too. At least you tried it, you know?

Ah, I understand. Really, it's all about who you follow. Now, I know some people here on F!S are out of the loop because they only follow nice people who are into Night Vale. The only reason I'm in the loop is because I wade through the tags and major Night Vale blogs so I can find ALL OF THE ART. Seriously, I reblog a lot of Night Vale art, normally from the source. (Let me even check it. Yeah, I have 827 things in my Night Vale tag. Mostly art.)

So really, if you wanna avoid the nastiness in fandom, because yes, it's there, then you need to choose who you follow carefully and not venture into the tag a lot. (Or at all maybe. Set your own comfort level.)

As for writing rare-pairs... I do know that people have written Cecil/Steve Carlsberg and even done art of it. A popular headcanon is that they had a bad break up and that's why Cecil is always nasty about him on the show. I know one of the most popular fics in fandom is about a minor character and an OC. I think the only backlash you would get is if you made Cecil or Carlos straight. I think they're gay but it's also possible they're bi. But if you make them straight people will throw a fit. Hmmm, if you ever get into it and need advice on a specific pairing you can come to me if you want. I don't mind. I mean, I'm wading through the wank anyway; I might as well use this knowledge for something.

But yeah, whatever you want. If you try it, like it, and want to be in fandom I say good for you. If you need any help I'm here. If you try it and don't like it that's also a fine decision. If you never try it, well, you can do that too. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks! That's super nice of you! (And it's somewhat comforting to know that, should I get bitten by the WTNV bug, I've got a guide on hand.)

And kudos to you for going the extra mile to re-blog from art sources! I know that bothers artists and I don't blame them! I'd throw a fit if a fic of mine started making the rounds on Tumblr without my name attached to it.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-11-19 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
You're welcome. It's really no problem. I'm there anyway. I might as well be useful.

Yeah, I try to be conscientious of that but also, I tag almost all my art by artist so that if I like a certain style or want to check if I already reblogged something from them I can just pop their name into my tag search and see. So it's also for selfish reasons. I will admit to slipping up sometimes and forgetting to tag or tagging the wrong person but it doesn't happen too often. (But it's also what make October killer because I was unsure if I was tagging artists right since all of them were switching their urls around to make them spooky.)
