I agree that it seems excessive when fic-writers portray Celestia as a goddess, though I've found some fics where they've gone for this approach while still recognising she is fallible and a pony. The instinctive deference, OTOH, I can't stand. It doesn't look good, not even for Celestia herself who comes across ('Best Night Ever' comes to mind) as a lady who'd quite like to do normal things some times.

One could argue, however, that her connection to the sun is a legitimate reason to think she and Luna ''are'' something out of the ordinary rather than ponies who - through birth or otherwise - came to rule Equestria. Perhaps their longevity, too, although their jobs have (supposedly) been done by unicorns in the past.

Mind you if that's the case, then surely ponies like Cadence and Twilight whose talents lie in abstract concepts (if magic=friendship) would also be deified. Time may tell if this has any basis in canon.

So, yes, I agree with you but think there might be something to the general idea of Celestia being a goddess.
