Graphics are like photographs...

You could take an amazingly detailed photo of some random landscape, but it's unlikely anyone will give a shit about it until you give them a reason to with a backstory or interesting detail.

It used to be that the interesting detail was "look how real it looks," but that's since been done to death and lots of games haven't realized it isn't the hyper-realism in itself but rather the novelty that was drawing people in. Now that novelty is mostly gone and they still don't know how to make people give a shit. Meanwhile, games like Okami get massive praise over graphics/art because the art style, story, and general theme of the game mesh together well and work together artistically instead of just plain "realistically."

Well, my characters look pretty damn amazing after modding them, they are eyecandy. I like to play male Altmer or Dunmer.

There's a lot of great scenery, and the skies, with the moons and the aurora borealis is amazing. The scenery make for great backdrops for screenies to be used in conjuction for stories, fics, too.

For better or for worst a lot of gamers are still taken in with the graphics and the big thing now are the ENB mods that change lighting, and focus, and shaders, for a lot of effects. Graphics are here to stay, I can tell you that from hanging out in the forums. Different strokes for different folks.

Yes, it does get irritating at times. They use graphics to put down the earlier TES games, especially Morrowind, which has a lot more substance in the way of theme, story, and a lot of artistic style.

To be fair, Morrowind is effectively unplayable as a game. It's got a lot of raw charm and honestly doesn't look THAT dated for a 12-year-old game but actually playing it is teeth-grinding.

Yeah, I didn't get very far in Morrowind because, in spite of the cool plotlines, characters and setting, I couldn't get past the shitty combat system. Even cheating like mad and abusing godmode could only ease the frustration so much.

ayrt

The first time I played Morrowind I hated it because it seemed so clunky and impossible so I didn't play it for a long time.

Then I went back to it after getting a game guide and the GOTY edition, and after leveling up the combat seemed easier and not so ridiculous. There is a larger array of weapons, spells, than there is in the later games.

And if there's something you didn't like about Morrowind, someone's made a mod for it, whether it be animation, combat, immersion, graphics.
