What would you recommend? Preferably movies in English, since I am a slow reader and can never seem to read subtitles and focus on the visual at the same time enough to enjoy the movie.

Chances are that if it's been nominated for a western award, the movie has been dubbed to english, so you could check those kinds of lists.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-21 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Are you okay with dubbed otherwise, the list will be short. Most foreign movies come from countries where people don't speak English as a first language.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-21 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
If it's a good job, yeah. I've seen some awful dubs and it just distracts me from the movie, but if it's quality I'll watch it.

I recently watched the film 'Kidulthood', thought it was rather good...wasn't that keen on the sequel though.

There's a channel 4 series in the UK that's recently finished called 'Top Boy', which again I thought was really good - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeIEogaPLr0

BBC comedy series called 'Some Girls' is fucking hilarious - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHexH2BUMa4

'My Beautiful Laundrette' is a brilliant film (queer POC...ticks all of tumblr's boxes there ;) ) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091578/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Thank you! I'll check those out. :)

Have to second "My Beautiful Laundrette"...wonderful film.

From my corner of the world:
The Sapphires (Aboriginal soul girl group who toured Vietnam. Great music, great cast, great costumes, occasionally quite funny. Actually couldn't recommend it enough).
Bran Nue Dae (Aboriginal musical. Silly and happy and cute.)
Rabbit Proof Fence (true story about three girls abducted from their families in Western Australia and taken to a mission school, who escaped and followed the rabbit proof fence for thousands of miles to get home. Amazing, also sure to make you righteously furious over our past bullshit, race-related policies)
Ten Canoes (the only feature film ever made in an Indigenous language - though there is a version with more English if that's your thing - and focusing on a Dreaming story and how the Dreaming functions in Indigenous societies. Can be a little difficult to enjoy if you go into it expecting normal movie formulas though).

And from NZ, Taika Waititi's stuff is great. He's heavily involved in Flight of the Conchords, to give you some idea, but his feature films remind me in some ways of Wes Anderson. "Eagle vs Shark" and "Boy" are the films.

This list is very relevant to my interests.

I'm seconding Rabbit Proof Fence.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-21 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you a million times over for those recs! I'm always looking for movies that get passed over by American audiences.

Ace Attorney is fucking awesome. It got a screening here at the Melbourne International Film Festival and it sold out weeks before the screening.

Also Kung Fu Hustle. It is laugh out loud hilarious. But don't want the dub, go the subs. It was a new release when I was working at a video store, and I would recommend it all the time.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (it's a TV series). It can be cheesy as hell sometimes, but I do adore it.

British TV show "The Kumars At No. 42"!

(Anonymous) 2013-11-22 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
"The Stoning Of Soraya M." with Jim Caviezel and Shohreh Aghdashloo, "La Haine", HBO's "House Of Saddam", "The White Balloon", "Uzhpizin", "Yossi and Jaeger"...

Nollywood (Nigerian) films are a lot of fun (even if they don't have very high production values - though that is changing) and there's plenty of them available on YouTube. They're nearly always in English.

I'm a bit late for this party but posting this anyway.

I would highly recommend ‘Eyes Wide Open’. It’s set in Jersalem and is about an Orthodox Jewish butcher and family man who finds himself attracted to his new, male apprentice. The acting and atmosphere in this movie are utterly compelling.

Also, I liked ‘Quinceañera’ - about a Mexican-American girl and her gay cousin.

Thanks for recommending "Eyes Wide Open"- I saw it & liked it. I didn't recommend it because the characters are Caucasian and the secret showed more interest in POC characters.
