What would you recommend? Preferably movies in English, since I am a slow reader and can never seem to read subtitles and focus on the visual at the same time enough to enjoy the movie.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-21 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Chances are that if it's been nominated for a western award, the movie has been dubbed to english, so you could check those kinds of lists.

IKR?

My country has been producing several pretty good works (and goes without saying, but with non-white casts) and some of then are even known in other countries.

Yet, in fandom only the most famous one is known. Or well, the American remake (full white cast) is well known, no one ever mentions the original.

And then people complain about white casting and how they want something else... IDEGI.

Or there's, you know, Tyler Perry movies. I don't particularly care for them (especially since a lot of them are marketed as comedies and in reality they have about 20% comedy and 80% drama and it's like "ew gross I wanted to laugh at this movie because I needed something funny to watch gdi Tyler Perry *flips table*"), but there are hardly any white characters and a lot of non-white characters in a majority of them. His "sitcoms" (again, not always comedies) are also like this. One of them features an African-American family whose neighbors are hispanic. White characters are generally minor or one-timers.

Completely agree. There are thousands of good 'foreign' movies/shows; people could support and raise awareness about those instead of whining about movies that have already been made. Like, best case scenario you'd get more movie imports.

At least check the Oscar nominees for foreign films if you're feeling lazy jfc

That is because a lot of those people forget the world outside the US exists. And when they do, the world for them is just WHITE PEOPLE and POC. They don't even differentiate between different races/cultures.

Yup. It's not like the movies from other countries are inaccessible either, as almost all of them are either officially subbed or fansubbed if you search google for like five minutes.

But no, American media is ALL of the media and what is the rest of the world?! cry the SJWs who proclaim themselves more educated and socially aware than the masses. Stop bringing your other culture shit in here when we're not championing you for your own good!!

And I dunno, maybe cause I got used to read subtitles since kindergarten to watch Western shows, I don't get it when people said they have trouble watching things with subtitles.

I hear this a lot too, but usually it's more along the lines of "I wish American media would acknowledge that white people aren't the only ones living in America." And generally, the excuse for a lack of POC in media is "well, there are a lot more white people here/there weren't a lot of POC in this time period/etc." It's a dumb excuse, imo.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-21 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
It's entirely possible to consume foreign media AND hope that Hollywood will become more representative of the actual US population.

i agree with this secret, but also when i hear this, normally i take it as "just once i'd like a movie without any white guys in mainstream hollywood". i mean sure, there are movies without any white guys out there, but the problem is that these movies don't reach the same amount of public movies with a full white cast do, or get the same attention. and i think that's what (at least some) people mean when they say that.

Ugh, you sound like someone whose response to "I want more movies with non-white characters" is "OMG did u know they make movies in Africa and Asia? Haven't you ever heard of Bollywood???!" Because an American wanting to see characters of their race in movies from their own country is obviously asking for too much and just doesn't know foreign cinema exists.

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2013-11-21 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
And you are not considering the likely fact that they want to see pocs and women represented in THEIR country's media. It's not the same to see a Korean woman in a film made in Korea by a Korean as it is to see a Korean-American in a starring role in a Hollywood film.

I agree, OP! Tbh I love Malaysian romcoms even though they're maddeningly silly and stereotypical. I'd like to throw out the title Bini-biniku Gangster (My Wives Are Gangsters) for anyone who likes a romantic comedy mixed with a little of people beating each other up and women being badass as Hell. Most Malaysian shows and movies are subbed by the network that airs them.

i'm just gonna chime in here, and recommend 'Redfern Now'

it's an Australian drama (so no subtitles needed!), airing on our ABC, and each episode is a stand-alone story about Indigenous Australians dealing with various issues

it's good. like, I was a bit hesitant to watch it at first, because you don't really ever see Indigenous Australians on TV (unless it's about crime rates or alcohol or something), but it's seriously good.

i'm just really proud that we've finally got a show like this. we finally did something right for once.

A few people did touch on this, especially toward the end, but for me, it isn't that I refuse to watch non-American things (although I don't have time to watch as much as I would like; my netflix queue is scarily long), it's that I want representation in American shows. I think it is rather silly that for a long time procedurals seemed to follow a formula of 5 or 6 characters, 1 of whom was a PoC and 1-2 of whom was a woman. The CSIs, NCISes, SVU, etc. Even non-cop shows, like House followed that general formula.

And like OUaT. Why are pretty much all of the characters white? There is a myriad of fairy tales from other cultures which could be used. Barring that, even if sticking to Disney fairy tales, why couldn't the characters be of other races? Why couldn't there be a black Prince Charming or Sleeping Beauty? Or a Native American Cinderella? Or whatever else?

There are some shows which don't follow that and are more diverse. I love Sleepy Hollow and Elementary, for example. I just wish that I could see more of it in American mainstream media. I don't want it to be segregated, where I can get mostly white (often male) casts in American media and diverse casts in foreign media.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-21 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
I fully believe that if the Ace Attorney movie was remade in the US, it would be absolutely massive in fandom.

Phoenix and Edgeworth eye fucking across the courtroom (yes, they use the western names in the English subtitles)? And Phoenix is just smoking hot.

Until then, just western fans of the games see it :(

(Anonymous) 2013-11-21 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
I've noticed that the usual response from US people when you recommend they watch foreign media is that they're not comfortable/they're too slow readers to read subtitles. And then they get upset when someone says that US people are pretty bad at reading subtitles.
