Or there's, you know, Tyler Perry movies. I don't particularly care for them (especially since a lot of them are marketed as comedies and in reality they have about 20% comedy and 80% drama and it's like "ew gross I wanted to laugh at this movie because I needed something funny to watch gdi Tyler Perry *flips table*"), but there are hardly any white characters and a lot of non-white characters in a majority of them. His "sitcoms" (again, not always comedies) are also like this. One of them features an African-American family whose neighbors are hispanic. White characters are generally minor or one-timers.

Is Tyler Perry's movies problematic? Every time somebody mentioned his name on the internet, they seem to not be too fond of him. His movies are not available for me, so I'm curious.

I've seen it argued that white critics were afraid to argue that Perry's movies were problematic, because they were afraid that they'd be accused of "not understanding black culture." Then he made a movie that basically invoked AIDs as a karmic punishment for sleeping around, and white critics savaged him, because AIDs was something they knew about and felt free to condemn artistic misuse of. (I haven't watched Perry myself, but I post on a writing website where one of the most prominent writers is a black Christian, and every time anyone so much as mentions Perry's name, he mentions how much he hates, hates, HATES Perry's movies.)

I wouldn't consider them promblematic, but they just really aren't that good. And as the other poster said, not that funny when they are supposed to be comedies.

Well, he seems to hate women.

I have suspension of disbelief problems with some of his movies myself. All these lawyers and judges running around and talking like thugs really weird me out.

I don't think you've ever been around black people who are with other black people. Most of us use black vernacular with each other. I use it for emphasis with all people, but most of the time I just speak in plain English as that's my default. A lot of white people do the same thing. There's nothing wrong with an "ain't" now and again--or as often as one is needed.

I agree, but that's not what I mean. Diary of a Mad Black Woman, for example, had a lawyer who literally never used formal English or even sounded like a lawyer, ever, not even in a courtroom. It was really poorly written dialogue, really, even though I found the rest of the movie enjoyable (depressing) enough.
