Is Tyler Perry's movies problematic? Every time somebody mentioned his name on the internet, they seem to not be too fond of him. His movies are not available for me, so I'm curious.

I've seen it argued that white critics were afraid to argue that Perry's movies were problematic, because they were afraid that they'd be accused of "not understanding black culture." Then he made a movie that basically invoked AIDs as a karmic punishment for sleeping around, and white critics savaged him, because AIDs was something they knew about and felt free to condemn artistic misuse of. (I haven't watched Perry myself, but I post on a writing website where one of the most prominent writers is a black Christian, and every time anyone so much as mentions Perry's name, he mentions how much he hates, hates, HATES Perry's movies.)

I wouldn't consider them promblematic, but they just really aren't that good. And as the other poster said, not that funny when they are supposed to be comedies.

Well, he seems to hate women.
