As opposed to what? The tiny sample of cult fandom shows which make it across the pond that is your insight into British TV?

Why do you I assume I watch 'cult fandom shows'? Pretty much any UK show is available to download without much work.

The stats I found said 8.3% of characters in UK shows are POC (although it's better for continuing drama), whereas 11-15% (11 for Network, 15 for cable) of lead characters in the US are POC. I can't find anything that includes non-leads, but obviously it would be higher.

I mean it's pretty shitty for both of them, but yeah. Either way tumblr et. al is watching majority white dudes.

It's not a straight comparison.

Firstly you'd have to control for a number of shows which are common here but almost non-existant in the US (Period Dramas are the most obvious and account for a huge number of not particularly successful shows), but there are a couple others), the actual straight popularity of shows with very strong diversity - Holby City, Eastenders, Coronation Street, The Bill etc are going to striaght beat any comparative show in the US. Lastly there's also the fact that if you looked at a breakdown of the number of non-white leads the UK I will hazard a guess, will have the lead. You don't really have the equivalent to Luther, or Top Boy, Hustle, etc.

All of which is simple figures and doesn't actually offer a full overview of the treatment of non-white characters. In the US in a way that doesn't exist in the UK you tokenise. You will always have a non-white character and that will for all intents and purposes be their role, and any lead you have will always be in a role in which colour matters.

But where are your Soap equivalents that are some of the biggest shows on TV where you can say in full honesty 'a third of the cast isn't white, and is fully realised'?

Sssh the only thing Iggy likes more than being hysterical is being an ignorant american.

You may as well talk to a brick wall.

Are you serious.

Lastly there's also the fact that if you looked at a breakdown of the number of non-white leads the UK I will hazard a guess, will have the lead. You don't really have the equivalent to Luther, or Top Boy, Hustle, etc.

But the above stats for the US were just for leads. Meaning there are more lead POC characters in the US than there are POC characters period on UK shows. So no, you are incorrect.

and any lead you have will always be in a role in which colour matters.

Wrong. Shows like Scandal, Elementary, Sleepy Hollow, etc. all feature POC leads that could have just as easily been played by white people.

In the US in a way that doesn't exist in the UK you tokenise.

Hahah yeah tokenization doesn't exist in the UK. Okay lol. I'm not even touching everything else. You are reaching. It is a 'straight comparison'.
