I feel you there as a fellow believer. I see people misusing it to justify horrible things and I just BOIL inside.

Today, heaven help me, I was hypothetically plotting murder when I read about that book by those fundies that's practically a child abuse manual.

As for advice I say, be the change you want to see. Try to exemplify the good aspects and hopefully you'll find other people who do so.

dude I saw that yesterday. It was just...I don't even know. So deeply saddening. Did you also get to it from the article about the third child who DIED because of abuse, and her parents cited the book??? and her sister was hospitalized.

The author just continues to be all "haha it's not MY fault!"

I know right. I remember seeing an article about it when I was young and being freaked out. I thanked my lucky stars that I was blessed with parents who had sense.

The authors are such morons.I mean really. It's classic "avoiding responsibility" "it's not MY fault they're doing it wrong." I think they should look in the Bible about what Jesus said regarding HARMING CHILDREN. Also some of the stuff I heard is in the book is well idiotic. "a baby is being manipulative by crying." NO THEY'RE BEING A FUCKING BABY BABIES CRY. IF YOU FEEL GUILTY AND THEN SMACK THEM AND SAY 'THEY"RE MANIPULATING ME' IT'S PRETTY DAMN CLEAR YOU SHOULD NEVER BE A PARENT.

How stupid do you have to be to think that a five month old infant is 'manipulating' you? The tactics in that horrible book are for people who feel the need to bully their children to have control.

oh but apparently only severely abused children grow up to be productive members of society!!!! (they actually said things like that too)

*facepalm*

Urgh...that's just stupid. The stuff in this book kills children's development and brings them up in a home of fear. The shit in this book doesn't teach respect it teaches fear. But overgrown bullies can't seem to tell the difference between the two.

Yeah don't get me started on that. My church was like this in the 1950s. By the time I was growing up (1970s) they had started focusing much more on the "how to raise your children to respect themselves so they will have respect for others." Now they have come full circle and don't talk about childrearing at all but they are pretty much back to "spare the rod spoil the child" mentality. :-(

That sounds awful that they're going back to that.

Just seriously Ugh.

That book needs to be burned

The worse thing is they were pretty much openly "yeah we beat our kids" in the 1950s and they were just as public about changing their stance in the 1970s. Now comes to the present and there is not one word from or in any documentation or sermon or anything but it is quite clear corporal punishment is back on the "menu" of parenting (or lack thereof) choices. It is just completely covered up and totally hidden now.
