Re: Don't stand, don't stand so, don't stand so close to me (dumb fans)

Certain Sherlock Holmes fans. Mostly the hardcore Holmes/Watson shippers who aren't content to fill in the gaps like normal slash fans, but feel obliged to take every single incident from canon, from entire plotlines to the smallest details, that made me love the characters in the first place and say NO WAIT WATSON WAS TOTALLY LYING IN ORDER TO COVER UP THEIR FORBIDDEN LOVE and after all the incidents that get dismissed are taken into account, there's basically nothing left of the actual canon that originally attracted me to the stories and the ship and I'm going "so, why do I even give a shit about these characters at all if 95% of what I read was an outright lie?" (This attitude isn't restricted to Holmes/Watson shippers, it's just the most common with them).

(just one example: Remember how well it reflected on Holmes's character, that he despised Milverton for preying on the foibles of the helpless and unfortunate when they failed to live up to the suffocating hypocrisy of Victorian morals? Well, say goodbye to that, because he only hated Milverton because Milverton blackmailed him over his homosexuality and only broke into his house to destroy Milverton's evidence of his affair with Watson. Those poor people who were being blackmailed in the original story? Nope, he didn't give a shit about them. He was just trying to save his own skin.)

Milverton info

Yo, I'm not even in Sherlock Holmes fandom really, but that is some bullshit right there. What the fuck.
