Don't stand, don't stand so, don't stand so close to me (dumb fans)

(Anonymous) 2013-11-23 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you ever been embarrassed for liking something due to the behavior of other fans? Can be as broad as being a fan of an entire canon work or as specific as shipping a particular couple or subscribing to a particular fanon, but the attitude is the same -- feeling like you wish those fellow fans of yours would go far away so that you wouldn't be in danger of being associated with them and their idiocy.

My Little Pony. Oh God, My Little Pony.

At first when I heard that the show was gaining a large male fanbase I was like "Oh, maybe this is somehow a sign of progress! This could be a great thing!". I WAS SO WRONG. I'VE NEVER BEEN MORE WRONG IN MY LIFE

No, you were right

His Dark Materials. I enjoyed the books well enough but they seemed to explode online and the fans make me cringe.

Teen Wolf. Because of both the dumbest of the Sterek shippers and the SJWs.

Fall Out Boy and Avenged Sevenfold. Mostly because a large part of the fanbase is much younger than I am and just attracted to the pretty. I was legit surprised when I found out the Fall Out Boy guy could sing and how good/complex the A7X music is.

Most things really, I'll admit that I've enjoyed it or whatever, but I'll act like it hasn't gone any further than that.

It's tame compare to others, but IRL people are really judgey over me liking the Hunger Games...and I'm only a couple of years outside of the age target so I don't get the big deal about me liking it o_O Apparently enough that they'll make jabs at work and on facebook because I went and saw the movie.

Fuck them though. I like it and it's fun.

Certain Sherlock Holmes fans. Mostly the hardcore Holmes/Watson shippers who aren't content to fill in the gaps like normal slash fans, but feel obliged to take every single incident from canon, from entire plotlines to the smallest details, that made me love the characters in the first place and say NO WAIT WATSON WAS TOTALLY LYING IN ORDER TO COVER UP THEIR FORBIDDEN LOVE and after all the incidents that get dismissed are taken into account, there's basically nothing left of the actual canon that originally attracted me to the stories and the ship and I'm going "so, why do I even give a shit about these characters at all if 95% of what I read was an outright lie?" (This attitude isn't restricted to Holmes/Watson shippers, it's just the most common with them).

(just one example: Remember how well it reflected on Holmes's character, that he despised Milverton for preying on the foibles of the helpless and unfortunate when they failed to live up to the suffocating hypocrisy of Victorian morals? Well, say goodbye to that, because he only hated Milverton because Milverton blackmailed him over his homosexuality and only broke into his house to destroy Milverton's evidence of his affair with Watson. Those poor people who were being blackmailed in the original story? Nope, he didn't give a shit about them. He was just trying to save his own skin.)

IRL fans who are really vocal about their likes give me second hand embarrassment like no other.

This would be how I feel about rabid Sterek shippers who either think they're already canon or that they will be.

Does Christianity count?

I recently was at a con where I was the only female cosplayer who showed up at an Ace Attorney cosplay shoot, and when we were talking about potential poses and the subject of Phoenix and Edgeworth came up, I kinda felt it necessary to clarify that while I do ship Phoenix/Edgeworth, that is not why I'm in the fandom and not why I come to meetups. :P (Turned out the Edgeworth cosplayer present also shipped them and so we took some real cute pics together anyway because I'm smaller than his usual Phoenix and thus was safer to do some poses with. XD)

Kotetsu/Barnaby in Tiger & Bunny fandom is sort of similar. I swear I'm not in the fandom for the slash, but the slash does not hurt. And I *like* Blue Rose, and wish the rabid yaoi fangirls would get over their ridiculous fears that she's somehow going to canonically wind up with Kotetsu and break up their ship. :P Even if that was likely, which it isn't... canon does not dictate fandom. (Besides, Karina is awesome in her own right and doesn't deserve to get booed. :( That made me really sad.)

I went to a convention and there was a dude in a leather jacket cosplaying...idk someone, but he was really demanding that he was everyone's master and to bow before him for photos and it was creepy shit so I kept giving him the sink eye and moving away when he came in my direction.

Firefly. I now actively hate the show, just due to the behavior of the Joss is God section of the fanbase.

Well there are some weird elitists in my fandom, and people who pretend they don't want to generate wank but do it anyway so I kind of hate them.

Kind of OT, the few people I know of who shares my love for one movie are also into cartoons like Disney stuff, Adventure Time, Legend of Korra. There's also a person who ships incest stuff. And I'm always afraid that if I say "Oh I love this movie!" people will think I watch cartoons "for children" and have unconventional kinks like my fellow fans. I know it's irrational. I feel very guilty about this, and I'm aware that it says a lot more about me than about my fellow fans. Especially since I do watch a ton of anime myself (but never talks about it IRL).
starphotographs: I like him. He kind of looks and acts like one of my characters. (I did not know this when I started liking him!) (Victor (...>:|))

I don't know if this is exactly embarrassment, but I kind of dislike most other Screaming Trees fans. They're pedantic and clannish and all arbitrarily hate some other, more popular 90s rock band for no real reason. I generally like the big-name bands that people think of when they think of grunge/90s alt, and I do not want people to think I have a stick up my ass.

I've gotten embarrassed by seeing people with Supernatural stuff irl, but only because they had bad tastes in fandom apparel designs.

Also the all the fans back when Hetalia was popular

not really. if someone wants to make assumptions or lump all fans together that isn't my problem. I can understand asking "are all fans really X?" but if they just straight-up assume then idc go away and let me have my fun.
