Con stories!

(Anonymous) 2013-11-23 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by the don't stand so close to me thread!

What sort of cringe-worthy stories do you have about conventions you've gone to? You can post fun stuff that happened too!

Bad: I've seen random people yaoi paddle random people. It was so cringy and not cool. They had to ban them at cons in my area (and probably others) for that reason.

Fun: Watching shows with other people that the collective haven't seen yet. It's fun to see everyone's expressions and cries of no or yes.

I never understood that yaoi paddle thing. Why would anyone spend money on it? Why would anyone think it is okay to wave it around and hit random people? Why?

Why would anyone spend money on it? You could ask that for everything at a con.

As for why anyone would want to buy it and think it's ok to hit people with it: they never learned proper etiquette spending more time on yaoi and think a convention is a magical place where you can be anime.

I don't know. It was a horrible time in fandom for the sane. I feel bad for the harassed.

The funny thing is, when it started? It was just this one booth selling them as a joke. Never intended for them to actually be USED on people. It was just this goofy harmless joke, and although I never bought one, I borrowed one on occasion to pose with other cosplayers for a laugh.

Then idiots started going around actually using them to hit people and ... yeah, there is a particular breed of yaoi fangirl that makes me much more inclined to use the word "slash" even when it IS Japanese media.

Bad: When I was 16 a 38ish guy tried hitting on me and touched my thigh. No one helped me get away from him, not even my friend's sister who was sitting next to me. I stuck to my mother the rest of the con. (She hadn't been there at the time.)

Good: As a zombie I got random zombie hugs from other zombies. Each of us move so slowly that it gives you a chance to say yes or no to the hug and once you do or do not get one both of you just shuffle off in the direction you were going before. It's harmless, nice, and a good mood-lifter.

One cringe-worthy thing I remember very clearly was when I was cosplaying as the Amano artwork of Celes from FF6, and decided to hit up the gaming room for some Rock Band. I was vocalist on a song, then was waiting my turn again and this guy started chatting me up and telling me I was such a great singer, at which point I thanked him, and then...

Guy: So who are you dressed as?
Me: Celes, from Final Fantasy 6.
Guy: Oh, that game was great! But I don't remember her looking like you.
Me: *laughs* Yeah, I'm doing the Amano design, the in-game sprite was pretty different.
Guy: No, I mean - I don't remember her being as HOT as you.
Me: ...Thanks...

And he kept asking me personal questions after that, and touching my arm, and my side, and eventually my thigh, so I decided to give up on Rock Band for awhile. "Oh hey, I was supposed to meet my friend for a shoot - seeya! *runs off*" :P

At that same con though, I met another guy who was cosplaying the Amano version of Locke, who was really funny, and we took some pictures together by the fountain that came out HORRIBLY because the wind was blowing and cold water was falling on us and we were grimacing at it and stuff, hahahah. We were tagged in Facebook later and I was like "LOLOLOL WHAT WERE WE DOING?!" And he has this whole circle of friends who also enjoy cosplaying older FF games, and I've gradually been introduced to so many awesome people through randomly indulging the "Hey Celes, let's get up on the fountain!" whim. XD

I also had my girlfriend there as Locke, but she'd wandered off during that photoshoot (talking to a DS version FF4 Cecil, hahah), but the next day we were in the costumes again and discovered that in the con's big "chill out and have some relaxing activities" room, there was randomly an FF6 world map on the floor that people were encouraged to write their names on and sort of claim their home or something. So we have a picture of Locke and Celes sitting together on the world map!

I have SOOOO many con stories. Mostly really fun ones. The cringe-worthy ones, for the record, aside from this and a couple Tiger & Bunny anecdotes, are almost entirely involving Homestuck and Hetalia cosplayers, which is why I instinctively steer clear of those fandoms unless it's someone I already know to be cool who just happens to enjoy the canon in spite of the fandoms being cesspools. :P

I loved reading all of this because Final Fantasy 4 and 6. <3 I'd totally want to see pics, but I don't want to be a creeper hahah.

This also reminded me that I've totally been debating the logistics of cosplaying Kain. Or at least, a FF dragoon. Considering I have never cosplayed, this would be next to impossible. :P

Oh man, I have cosplayed Kain, and this came after ten years of cosplaying, and... yeah. It is not an easy first costume. Or an easy second or fifth or tenth costume. Not an easy costume at all, and mine did not hold up for more than two cons and now needs major repairs or a revamp if I'm ever going to wear it again. Amusingly, it ties into this story, because I made it due to someone needing a Kain for a big FFIV group, and it turned out that the Locke cosplayer I met at that shoot? He was supposed to be their Golbez. And then sadly I couldn't make it to the con and he didn't have time to make the costume. XD

(But since I pulled it off and I am proud of it, here, have some pics. XD Though you probably meant of the FF6... Here's one of me with my own Locke. You don't sound like a creeper - cosplayers generally like showing off! At least to other fans. Random fanboys who don't know what we're cosplaying and are behaving inappropriately - it's not for them. :P)

Well, I did mean FF6, but that was before I knew you cosplayed Kain. XD those pics are awesome! I especially like the Jump poses... no dragoon cosplay is complete without those. That aside, I'm loving the costume. (I'm torn been intimidated and wanting even more to do a dragoon - but the amount of time and help I'd need would be jnsane. ;))

The Locke and Celes one is gorgeous too. :) Thanks for sharing these, I've missed geeking out about Final Fantasy, haha.

Well, I used to cosplay. The following are just a few of the fucked up things that have happened to me at Cons/because of Cons:

- Being offered plane tickets to Cons plus hotel fare if I or my group would have sex in costume

- One of my group members being stalked by a 50+ year old woman. Said cosplayer was 19.

- Being invited to various threesomes with married couples

- The Yaoi paddles. Oh my god.

- People offering to pay for "fanservice" pics (I'll pay you if you'll kiss so-and-so, it's my OTP!)

- Meeting online friends who turned out to be stalkers *this was rare

- Being groped by fangirls on a pretty much constant basis while in costume

- Being just generally asked to simulate sex acts for photos. Without being paid. I don't know if that's better or worse than the people offering to pay.

- One of my group members being harassed by a certain photographer for nude shoots, who then got angry and followed said cosplayer around to every Con she went to for a year after they refused.
