In Harry Potter, when authors feel the need to take FOREVER to explain why certain characters aren't in their fic. For god's sake, it's fanfic - just describe the constellation your story needs and stop insisting on taking the first chapter to describe crap like who went on to study in what stupid university and is therefore no longer in Harry's life when it's not going to be relevant AT ALL for the rest of the story. A line or two would be fine. a paragraph even. But even that is just hand-waving or lampshading and really, really unnecessary.

On a related note, if the dynamic is other than in canon, nobody wants to read the five paragraphs detailing how everybody who isn't on a first name basis in canon decides to deign to use first names with each other.
