I like how you chose a picture of gothel where she's kissing rapunzel's hair, the only thing she is demonstrated to really care about and the consistent target of whatever affection she shows her

(Anonymous) 2013-11-24 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
This exactly. That was actually one of my biggest criticisms about the movie. It would made for a much more interesting villain to see her made more complex (a la the Witch in Into the Woods). But in the movie, it's pretty clear that it's Rapunzel's hair she loves so much, not Rapunzel herself.

Says you. I didn't think it was "pretty clear" at all. Please don't presume that your impression is the only interpretation people are allowed to have.

na

for some reason I'm getting loki-stan vibes from you. not sure why

(Anonymous) 2013-11-24 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
ayrt

LOL fuck no. I think Loki is a villain and Loki-stans piss me the fuck off.

But it's very nice and mature that you automatically equate "villains are humans with emotions and therefore should be held responsible for their evil actions because they are not just inhuman Evilbots who couldn't choose otherwise" with "villains are justified in whatever evil shit they do as long as they have feels about it." That's a very adult and reasonable way of thinking.

That whole "lol a stan" meme is just lazy dismissal where you absolve yourself of the need to argue your position. Accusing people of being a stan (unless their name is Stan of course) is just an admission you don't have an argument but want feel as if you are right somehow.

Lokistan sounds like a country

It seemed like the writers went out of their way to show that she didn't care about Rapunzel. You can interpret it however you want, personally, I found it more interesting to think of her developing a twisted motherly affection, but that's just not how it was intended.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-24 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
but that's just not how it was intended.

So, I presume that this means you asked the writers about this, right?

Did I say that? Or was the implied "to me" unclear?

It does no one any good to speak tentatively for fear of disagreeing with someone, and it's something I endeavor never to do. I have to put up with enough of that from the papers I read.

If you have an opinion to state, state it simply. And if you disagree, disagree. I will do the same. I have stated my opinion, and it is up to you to disagree. Though keep in mind if you have nothing substantive to support your views, you're not likely to convince anyone.

I don't agree. I like that they portrayed Gothel's motivations as being cunningly disguised manipulation. It's so easy for people to say 'but she really did care!', but only if they trick themselves into believing it to be so.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-24 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
But I don't think that valuing Rapunzel for her hair is totally incompatible with having genuine affection for Rapunzel. In fact, it would be more than understandable to develop a twisted affection (maybe love would be stretching it, but certainly affection, or the illusion of love) for the source of your youth and beauty, even if you treat that source as your property to use as you please rather than a living human being.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-24 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Where would you prefer her to be kissing? The top of the head/hair is a pretty standard place to kiss children or even shorter loved ones when hugging.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-24 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Forehead.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-24 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Too forced for the pose in the picture. Kiss on the top of the head is way more natural, imo. I kiss my kids like that all the time but cannot think of a time I kissed them on the forehead.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-24 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt

Considering how obsessed Gothel was with the hair, I'm pretty sure it was a very deliberate decision on the part of the filmmakers

(Anonymous) 2013-11-24 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
So why was it the ONLY place Gothel kissed...or stroked?

I just re-watched the movie recently, and another thing that stood out for me (aside from the hair kiss) was Gothel calling Rapunzel "my flower".

This. I sat down and watched Tangled once specifically watching Gothel around Rapunzel. The ONLY thing she showed affection for was Rapunzel's hair. If she was affectionate to Rapunzel, she was stroking her hair or touching her hair. That's it. There's no affection shown that doesn't involve the hair, the flower, or something related to it.
