I did a secret about this before. My mother and aunt were both abused by my grandmother. Gothel didn't remind my mother of my grandmother, she reminded her of my aunt. (Then again, from what I've heard of cycles of abuse, the difference can be slim.)

The issue with Gothel isn't how she presents herself to Rapunzel, but what we, the audience, see of her. That's the point of villains like that. Think of Iago from Othello.
