Can't I do anything for fun without being told I should try to monetize it? I talk about how I love to write and people tell me how sad it is that I don't want to show it to other people and make something of it. I knit something for myself or other people and they immediately tell me that I should sell my knitting. That's not why I do these things!

It seems to apply only to certain things. I like cooking, but I've never been told to open up a roadside stand. I also like calligraphy, and when I was in high school (and still pretty bad at it) I would have teachers offering advice on how I could go about starting a website and making a legitimate business out of it, and how I might organize my time around that and schoolwork. I'd heard similar things about writing, and I reacted the same way for both: by taking long breaks until people stopped talking about it.

The "best" part of this is how the people who say things like that always completely fail to grasp how much you'd have to charge for a handmade item just to break even. I've lost count of how many times I've held up most of a sock and told someone, "I paid twenty bucks for the yarn alone and I've probably put fifteen hours into this so far. You really wanna pay me what this is actually worth?"

(My dad also keeps saying I need to find a way to make money of my custom My Little Ponies. Holy not-recognizing-a-niche-market-when-you-see-one, Batman.)

Actually, you can make a pretty decent amount off of custom ponies. My sister used to do it for a while and while she wasn't rolling in dough, it earned her a fair amount of extra spending money. You'll get even more if you're willing to take commissions.

If you do anything more dramatic than rehair-and-new-symbol you have to be jaw-droppingly good to make a profit once you factor in time spent, and I specialize in heavy sculpting.

This. My art is photography - and by that I mean old fashioned black and white photography done in the traditional wet darkroom. The cost to get a really good print for the paper, film, chemicals and time in the darkroom makes it a really expensive hobby. There is reason silver gelatin prints cost what it does.

Heck even digital prints done on good paper with really good inks can cost lot to produce.

There seems to be a fairly strong trend among people on f!s thinking other people aren't ambitious enough, actually. :/

I've had similar problems with art...and I did used to sell it when I was jobless so at least people have a reason for suggesting I make it my main income.

But it's so unreliable! Drawing for others is boring! Schedules take the fun out of it! I can't just draw whatever I want it has to be X! Bah! It's nice to know I can sell it but that's not why I do it! I want art to be a fun hobby I happen to take seriously and draw whatever I want when I want, not a career!

My mother has told me point blank I'm weird because I don't let people read my writing. She's also told me I'm a bad writer for this fact. Oh, I let people read my stuff. I just don't let *her* read it, because of comments like that.
