Funerals were considered devil worship and mourning was considered denial of everlasting life in heaven. A Deacon would pray over the body as it was buried in an unmarked grave, some families chose to attend the burial and experienced some shunning and cold shouldering for doing so. The only acceptable public acknowledgement of a death was a joyous prayer and song of celebration led by the family's assigned Deacon at the next Sabbath service.
