I'm of two minds about this. I once wrote a lot of fan fiction. Now I'm writing a lot of original fiction and getting paid for most of it.

Do I regret the time I spend writing fanfic? Hell no. I just wrote one last night. It was for fun.

I was told by people at times that I should be writing original because these AUs were so close already, but MY HEART was in the AUs, writing as they were. I tried my best, I enjoyed myself, I learned a lot. :-)

I did eventually end up rewriting a couple of strongly AU stories that I hadn't published as fic and selling them as original. But that took time, and it's harder than you'd think!

Sometimes I wonder if all the fic writing I did was a waste, but then I think about it a little harder and realize, "heck no!!"
