Fire Emblem: Awakening. The entire Shin Megami Tensei series, but especially the Persona games. Maybe Half-Life? (I've never actually seen a flame war in that fandom, unless you count "Where the **** is Half-Life 3?", but it definitely relies a lot on headcanon.)

This pretty much seems to be a video game thing.

Video games use it a lot because it helps make the player the main character. In other mediums that's harder to do.

Awakening, really? I feel like all the characters were pretty well-defined in that one, even the Avatar.

The Avatar was very well-defined in the game itself, but the fic tends to throw that out in favor of making him an author insert.

Part of me wants to defend Awakening, because even the adjustable self-insert unit has a set personality, but compared to the rest of the series it's painfully flat, and the characterizations in fandom are even flatter. Henry: LOL PUNS! Inigo: MANHANDLING! Kellam: LOL WHO'S THAT! It's so tiresome.

This, so much.
