people are always telling me i should stop giving things away, implying that my work is worthless unless it has a pricetag on it.

I mostly see the opposite, that you are devaluing yourself and everyone who has ever touched your hobby if you'd rather give stuff away than sell it for what it's "worth." And in the case of knitting and crochet, you are somehow selling out all of womankind because you are dismissing the value of "the female arts." (And as I noted elsewhere, people who don't write/draw/craft/whatever have no clue what the actual value of a handmade item is in time, expertise, and materials.)

I've been considering knitting slippers for a coworker as a "just because you make me hate this job a little less" gift. This whole topic is making me decide that yeah, I totally should.

you totally should!! I crochet gifts for people all the time, usually "just because" type things, because crocheting makes me happy. And I draw/write things by request without charging, not because I think it's worthless, but because that's what I want to do.
