Why this attitude bothers me...

Having not read the replies that are already up...

I'm a fanfiction writer. I've had fights on message boards over this very thing. Not arguments. Fights. I honestly don't know if I'm a "good" writer in regards to professional publication. All I know is that I write original stuff and have gotten many years worth of rejection letters from publishers and literary agents. I do not know if my ideas are not mainstream enough, or if my problem is not having any relatives or friends in the "biz" or if I really am just not good enough on originals. It's to the point where I have a trusted person helping me with a final edit of a novel I'm planning to put on Kindle to try to "grease the wheels." I also splurged and bought some domain space for the express purpose of putting up my original short stories for free in hopes that they will be enjoyed by at least a few people.

(If people request, I can de-anon myself and link my website for anyone who wants to read random fantasy and sci-fi short stories. I have one about a young girl who survives the disapperence of all mankind and enjoys it, a story about a man who experiences an unwanted resurrection... you know, really weird stuff).

That said, I also write fanfiction. Again, I have a hard time judging myself, but for what it's worth, I have stories recommended on TV Tropes for three different fandoms and am a recced all-around author for one of them. I don't know how good that is as "cred," but it's pretty special to me because that site is a wonderful time-sink for me.

I've *tried* doing the "publish your original work and not giving away one's work for free" route and... it hasn't worked out for me. On the other hand, putting up a quick-shot fanfic of mine on Fanfiction or Archive is free and - that stuff *gets read.* It is enjoyable, and, if possible, I'll probably still be doing fanfic if I ever get known by the real publishing world, because it's fun, dammit.

I'm a twitchy, bipolar beast of a writer - I feel like I need to be creating something all the time. If I'm writer's blocked on one of my original projects, fandom is always there.

I'm a gen-ficcer at that... somehow, I still get read. That feels good. Writing fanfiction makes me happy.

Then why in God's name should any of us bother to read yours?

Why did you bother to read and reply?

I saw the secret, had something to say and didn't want to slog through a sea of other people's commentary before saying it.

Again, you read and replied.

Someone's allowed to reply to the secret even if they don't feel like looking at other replies. Why should that be a requirement?

Because sometimes [general] you really want to reply first, before going through other comments, so that you get your own thoughts out without them getting muddled up in other opinions.

Exactly! I do this quite often on message boards for threads that have gotten way-long liek whao, where the original question or post interested me. I tend to go back and read through some of the sea of replies later, if I have time.
