Wow that got a bit deeper than I thought (TW: RL murder I guess?)

In fiction like in real life even bad people can do good, just like good people can do bad. And any good deed you do counts, but does not take away from the bad things you do. So even if a character is nice to the elderly, saves puppies and volunteers in a soup kitchen, if he kills someone he is not a good person... Does not mean that the puppies didn't get saved or the elderly lady s/he helped over the street didn't have something good to them, but it does not make me forgive the character, because doing something bad always counts more than doing something good.

Only way in my mind you get redeemed for doing something bad is taking your punishment and then not doing anything bad again, then even if the bad stuff isn't undone, you have served your sentence (depending on what kind of fictional universe this is, serving a sentence can be completely different), and can join the good side or be forgiven I guess.

I will pull the my life is fucked up card and tell you a story, because the thread about seeing dead bodies made me think of her, and it kinda fits into this thread:

My cousin was killed by her step father, I absolutely believe that he loved and cared for her. but he also killed her and he might be remorseful and he might even never kill again, but I don't think he is completely evil. I don't think anyone can be completely evil, he is not a good man and he will never be. And I will never forgive him, but I don't want him to suffer or be mistreated in any way because he is still an human being, maybe a double murdering rapist scum of an human being, but that is not everything he is. He was actually a pretty cool step uncle, he was a nice step father and father, well up until the point he murdered again he was a person I trusted and he didn't hurt any of us...
