I don't think everyone experiences games the same way. I've played Portal 1 and half of 2 among other games, and I don't project myself into the main character. I still am engaged in the sense that I believe I'm facilitating the story and I'm solving the puzzles, but I am not Chell. She is Chell and it's her story. I'm just an active audience.

I still find it very immersive, just in a different way.
