I only use pads, never used a tampon, and I've never caught shit for it
(though granted, in middle and high school I rarely talked about periods to anyone...I was very much the opposite of the way I am now with TMI stuff)

(Anonymous) 2013-11-25 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)(Full disclosure: it wasn't directed at me specifically, but at our whole class, because a suspiciously large number of girls had notes excusing them from swimming that day. I get that girls overplaying the period card would be a huge frustration for PE teachers, but that doesn't make what he said okay. I was really ashamed of myself for not being able to use tampons for years after his little speech.)

I mean I get that he had no perspective for realizing that wasn't okay, but it doesn't take that much thought to realize that teenage girls are REALLY self-conscious about their periods...
When I was on high school we had a separate section for swimming and we'd rotate in and out. The only two teachers who taught swimming were female. The first time I took gym I changed my rotation to avoid having to swim on my period since it was summer school and each rotation was only 3 weeks. The second time it was this lady who was really quite awesome; even though I hated gym, she was probably one of my favorite teachers there. Super sweet, nice, and understanding lady. She talked to the girls separately and told us that she encouraged us to wear tampons, but if we were really not comfortable with that, she wasn't going to penalize us for staying out of the pool for those days. Which is what I did and she was totally fine with it. I just walked laps around the edge of the room for my "exercise".

I was thinking about it a lot after I wrote that comment and some more little bits came back to me, including a statement about the only valid reason for not using tampons was if you had some sort of medical condition that made it impossible. I thiiiiink he insisted upon bringing in a doctor's note if you were going to cite your period as your reason for not swimming? Sooooooo much rage.
That's really good she was like that! <3 My female PE teachers weren't as bad as this guy, but they definitely weren't amazing.
