As someone who grew up in an ambivalent environment, I have to disagree.

Genuinely caring¹ about someone else doesn't justify treating them (or someone else) like shit the rest of the time. If someone is capable of caring, they should care enough to treat others (or at least most people) with a basic level of respect.
